Show 1 THE FOURTH OF JULY. H Our great national day is thc'Fourth of July, which of laie years. H or since the prohibition of firecrackers and the toy pistol, has not H been celebrated with the enthusiasm of old. H AVhen the men of middle life today were boys, Fourth of July H was made up of about 18 hours of the most exciting sport of shoot- H ing firecrackers and maiming and killing a per cent of young Axner- H iea. The fatalities of a Fourth of July in those days were not much H less than the listf dead in a small battle. Theucame the demand for a sane Fourth and the firecracker H disappeared, and with it went much of the exhilarating spirit of the j natal day, until the Fourth of July became so tame as to be almost ignored as an occasion of patriotic demonstration. Hj In Salt Lake City this year, prominent people arc endeavoring H to revive the "old fashioned Fourth," with everything as of old j included except the boy-killers .the firecracker and the toy pistol. H It is a cause worth while, and Ogden should not be far behind H the capital in stirring up interest in our national celebration. |
