Goorge Fitzgerald, chauffeur for Enrico En-rico Caruso, opera singer, whose country coun-try homo here recently was robbed of Jewels valued at $500,000, wa3 arrested tonight on a charge of violating the Sullivan law by having a revolvcrr in his possession without a permit. Fitzgerald, Fitz-gerald, with other employes of the household, has been detained on the Caruso estate since the Jewel theft by order of the district attorney. The chauffeur, when bidding goodbye good-bye to his wife and children, who occupy oc-cupy a small house on the Caruso cs-' late, said; "Don't worry. 1 am lnno- cent. They are trying to lay this rob-j oery on me." . ! Fitzgerald recontly engaged personal per-sonal counsel to defoiul him. He was informed by counsel today that tho jollce had no right to keep him confined con-fined to tho estate, and thai ho was at lberty to leave when he pleased. Later in investigator attached to the district Ulornoy's office caused his arrest. "That revolver was given to me by Mrs. Caruso when we arrived here on May S," FlLigTOld said tonight. "L lever carried that revolver on my por-on por-on while off the grounds. It was kept in a bureau drawer in my room for rhe protection of Mrs, Caruso and her baby." |
