Show STEEL SHARES SHOWSTRENGTH Liberty Bonds Are Increasingly Increasing-ly Weak Under Extended Selling Pressure NEW YORK, April 21. Stocks were irregular at the opening of today's trading, reflecting the uncertain condition condi-tion of yesterday's market but advances advanc-es exceeded declines. Oils, steels motors mo-tors and equipments rose 1 to 3 points within the first few minutes. There was a marked demand for Crucible, Lackawanna, and Vanadium Steels, Studebaker, Royal Dutch, Shell Transport, Trans-port, Mexican Petroleum and Baldwin and American Locomotives. Food and textile issues were relatively backward: back-ward: Short covering imparled a further fur-ther steadiness to the list later. In the bond market, however, still lower low-er records wore made by Liberty issues. is-sues. New financing and poor earnings accounted ac-counted for the heaviness of low-priced oils, but the representative issues of that group continued to feature the) further recover' of the morning an gains of 2 to 6 points. In other quart-1 ers also the market displayed cohsid-l erable recuperative power. Independ-J ont steels added substantially lo early advances, especially Crucible, VanadI i urn and Replogle. Shipping strengthened strength-ened and sugars and textiles rallied, easily with chemicals, but rails were, moderately reactionary. Call money! opened at seven per cent against yes-, terday's first quotation of eight per cent. Shorts began another drive against dealers at midday. Steels, oils, motors, mo-tors, shippings and sugars fell 2 to 12 points under early maximums. Liberty i bonds became increasingly weak, first i 4's selling at 87, or $2.80 per 100 un- 1 tier yesterday's final price and the ; first 4Vi'a at SS, or $1.70 under the pre- I vious low.
