Show 1920 IS BIS AVIATIONYEAR I NEW YORK, April 21 Air events ! planned for 1920 promises to make it a bijr-avlallon sport year, according I to the American Flying club. The first ! event of importance will be the flying field day of the Inte.rcojlegiato Flying Fly-ing association at Mlneola Field, X, May 7. Eleven colleges and universities uni-versities will be represented in a varied var-ied program of flying stunts, which will bo. concluded with a cross country coun-try flight. In this race each will bo permitted to enter two airplanes and la up will be awarded the winner. The start will be made at MIncola Field, where the race also will end after a circuit that probably will include Philadelphia and Princeton. Arrangements also arc being- made by the club for a seaplane race around j Long Island. This probably will be hold early In the summer. The club Is cooperating with the training and operation group of the United States army air service In planning for a trans-continental air race between New York and Alaska, a distance of -1.S70 milca. In the tentative plans the course is mapped out from Mir.eola across United States territory to MI-not, MI-not, N. D., crossing the Saskatchewan. Can., and across the Dominion to Fort Egbert on tho Alaska border. In Alaska the route runs to Circle. Fort Youkon. Fairbanks by way of Fort Gibbon, thence to Nulato and Nome. Compulsory stops at an average of each 150 miles will be arranged. Flying events of a sporting nature will not be confined, however, to tho United States In 1920. In France a flying meet is scheduled to be held at .luvisy, near Paris, May 22 and 23. The British aircraft exhibition will be held at London In July. In addition addi-tion the British government has offered of-fered several millions in pounds as prizes for various airplane sporting events to be held during the year. The Capo de Cairo route is being blazed. Between the two points the distance by rail, steamship or pround transport Is approximately 6,223 miles. The aerial line is about 5,200 miles. oo |
