Show ' OGDEN ATHLETES MAKE GOOD MARKS Former Star Gives Views on Plans for New Athletic Playing Field (By HARRY BAGLBY) With the records of Ogden athletes of bygone days comparing more than favorably with other cities and towns of the state, the installation of the new municipal athletic field which provides pro-vides not only one of the best running tracks in the west, but a first class football grid and a baseball diamond, Ogden should in the future win even further honors on the athletic fields of the state. I High school records for past years i give examples of what Ogden youths nave accomplished despite the fact that at no time they had an adequate placo to prepare themselves fox big contests. ! Probably the greatest of these ath-1 leles in recent years are Fuller, Kay, I Hibbs, Warner. Falck. Dee and o I hers. These men trained under adverse conditions. Their training field was. either a great distance from the school' building or was inadequate to their needs. A running track of about 250' yards was their only chance for do- j veloping wind and speed and despite, this condition, state records have been; be"aten by men from the Ogdn high. Until Superintendent W. Karl Hop-j kins became superintendent- of Ogden; schools, there was a genera! falling off in athletic interest at the Ogden high school. Despite this fact, a group of Tigers annexed state honors in 1917 and in 1918 made a creditable showing at the state track meet. At present there are at least two: men at the Ogden high school who aroj looked upon as material of importance,! Hutton and O'Keefe, who may develop: into phenoms if predictions of a num-l ber of sportsmen come true. ' Regarding the football gridiron, lhis field will furnish not only an adequate training field for the Ogden high; school bur for Weber college as weIL,i which embraced this game last jear. 1 Extensive developments in track are1 looked forward to from this school as well as from the Ogden high school. oo |
