Show -t- 4- Cardinals Will be Battling Outfit . But Are Doomed to Second Division . j., (By Norman E. Brown) It's a pretty good bet that you won't hi able to use the St, Louis Cardlnaln lor the usual run of baseball jokes this summer. But I can't scj'e them breaking Into first division. Rickey has enough good men on his team now to make U a fighting organization. organi-zation. The outfield Isn't a -great outfit, but ought to hold Its own. Bert Shotten J is. the leading member. With him will bo Austin McIIenry and Heathcote or Jack Smith. McHonry played 103 games for Rickey last season and ranked fourth among the steady outfielders out-fielders In fielding. Ho hit .286. Heathcote didn't stack up to McHonry McHon-ry as a fielder, but hit well. Smith is a weak hitter and only a fair fielder, judging by his work last season. The whole trio is fast, however. Rogers Ilornsby takes off his hat to no one as an Infielder., With him on second, Fournlor on first, Johnny La-van La-van at short and Milton Stock, former Phllly star, nt third, Rickey can hold his head up when inflelders are discussed. dis-cussed. Pickles Dillhoefer and Vernor demons dem-ons will handle what pitchers Rickey can scrape up. But right thero's tho rub. He can be counted on another season at least. Jack Haines, a youngster grabbed grabbed from Kansas City in the A. I A., looks like the third member of the regular staff. He copped twenty-one! victories while losing only five last season for the K. C. crew, Frank Woodward, another former member of the Phils, could 3tep in as a regular if he got busy and decided to work at top speed. Bill Doak can be'eounted on to do his usual fair job of pitching and perhaps one or two of tho youngsters ! Rickey has may surprise him.
