Show GOVBUHH URGES III TO SAVE FRUIT PITS ID IT SILLS Emphasizing the Imperative need for tho saving of nut shells and frujt pits, with which carbon is made for the life-saving gas masks that the American Ameri-can soldiers must be equipped with at all times, Governor Simon Bamberger has authorized the following: "Fruif pits and nut shells are required re-quired in great quantities by the government gov-ernment in order to provide the necessary neces-sary carbon for use in gas masks worn by our boys at tho front. Gas masks provide the only protection against the poisonous gases used in modern war- I fare. Our boys must have this pro- I tection." I "If this matter is understood there i is no one in this state, man, woman or child, who will not earnestly and en-j en-j thusiastically set about to collect fruH pits and nut shells. It is of vital importance im-portance in saving the precious lives !of our boys now engaged in the terrific ter-rific struggle. All school superintendents, superintend-ents, teachers, tho pulpit and the press should give everyone to understand how much depends upon this work." "As an illustration: Two hundred peach stones, or seven pounds of other i pits and shells will provide sufficient carbon for one gas mask. One gas mask will save one life. j "The following will give an idea of the material required by the govern-: ment. "Peach stones, apricot pits, prune pits, plum pits, olive pits, date seeds, cherry pits. Brazil nut shells, hickory hick-ory nut, walnut and butternut shells. "All collections of such material shoull be turned over to the nearest Red Cross chapter or branch. "The season for canning and preserving pre-serving will soon bo over, and prompt action is necessary. Tho need is urgent. urg-ent.
