Meantime Influenza continues to spread to the country In spite of the strenuous efforts and drastic measures meas-ures taken to prevent it. The malady now has reached epidemic proportions in many additional cities, including Portland, Lebanon and Corvallis, Ore. .It also has appeared In several counties coun-ties in Oklahoma and Nevada, while from five to six hundred municipalities in Illinois report the disease. Conditions at army camps today showed a slight imp'rovement for the second time since the malady became epidemic in the training places. During Dur-ing the twenty-four hours ending at noon 12,321 new cases were reported to the office of the surgeon general of the army with 2797 new cases of pneumonia pneu-monia and 889 deaths. The total of influenza cases reported at army camps since the disease first appeared has now reached 211,000: pneumonia cases 25,083, and deaths 7432. The campaign of tho public health service is now well under way. Nearly 25f) physicians are in the field and headquarters have been organized in more than thirty cities. The volunteer medical corps of the council of national nation-al defense and the American ..Red Cross are actively co-operating with the health service in its campaign in New England, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Jer-sey, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida and Mississippi as well as in Arizona and Montana. In other states local headquarters head-quarters have been established in many cities. Additional cities to which physicians of the public health service have been sent include Helena, Mont, and Win-slow, Ariz. |
