Show DR. E. A. STURGE GIVEN J RECEPTION Bf JAPANESE . A company of twenty guests sat down to dinner in the spacious dining room at the Union depot last night at 7:30 and joined in welcoming to Ogden Og-den Dr. E. A. Sturgc, a well known worker among tho Japanese people living on tho Pacific coast. Toro Uchida. secretary of tho Inter-Mountain Inter-Mountain Japanese association, in introducing in-troducing Dr. Sturge, spok? of the new enterprise which, by the ready initiative of Rev. Masasuke Koboyashi, and of Dr. Sturge and Dr. Hinman of the Congregational churches, was now underway for the evangolization of the Japanese people resident in the inter-mountain inter-mountain country. Through the energies ener-gies of these gentlemen and men like Dr. Fukushyma of this city, 'they were now able to have present with them their own minister, the Rev. Toyotome who, as soon as the state will allow, will begin his ministry in Ogden and Rev. John Edward Carver of the First Presbyterian church and Rev. Godfrey Matthews of the First Congregational Con-gregational church spoko warmly in praise of the enterprise and wished It every good success. Speaking in the name of their own congregations, they promised whatever aid might be needed need-ed to make the enterprise a success. "Dr. Sturge, in a brilliant address, referred re-ferred to the fact that the decoration he received from the late emperor was not granted him for any personal distinction, dis-tinction, but because the emperor wished to express his thanks to some American on the Pacific coast who was rendering service to the Japanese people peo-ple living there, so, said Dr. Sturge, "I wear tho decoration of the fourth degree de-gree of the Rising Son not. because of any personal labors of my own, but as representing many Americans who have striven to render good service in the name of Christ for the Japanese in our midst." Continuing, Dr. Sturge said ho had never been present at the beginning of a new piece of missionary work that augured so well for the future and promised so much in fulfillment as this meeting in Ogden." "This missionary enterprise is a union effort of the Presbyterian and Congregational churches and is to be commenced for the spirit of unity that dominates its inception and will manifest mani-fest every detail of its undertaking," said Rev Godfrey Matthews. |
