Show EASTERN STAK REWARDED 11 RECEIVING 1 APPRECIATIVE ' LETTER FROM A SOLDIER 10! That the soldiers who were recently stationed In Ogden for a few days appreciated ap-preciated the warm welcome which was extended them by tho Eastern btar, is evidenced by the following letter, let-ter, which was received by one of the members, and speaks for itself: "To Members of the Eastern Star, Ogden, Utah. . "I am glad to express to the ladies of Queen Esther chapter and Miriam chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, the sincere thanks of myself and of Battery E, 83rd field artillery, for their kind interest and friendly hospitality during our stop-over in Ogden. "It was 'ono wonderful day,' as the boys named it Nino long months we have been kept in the routine of Intensive In-tensive drill and work without much symptahy from persons on 'the outside,' out-side,' or perhaps from those who are interested but cannot keep in touch with a soldier's r. until we slopped slop-ped in Ogden and started from the train into the city and were ' by a sign, 'Soldiers Welcome' on the Eastern East-ern Star Masonic temple building, wo had not known the free and open appreciation ap-preciation of civilians for tho boy in uniform. "It may be the opinion of outsiders 4.hat soldiers are not inclined to frequent fre-quent places ordinarily styled 're-'spectable.' 're-'spectable.' This may be true, but it is I also true that they are not always wel-j wel-j come to such places and, not feeling welcome there, they would seek haunts where they would feel at home. Surprisingly, Sur-prisingly, the boys at the club rooms looked at each other; such hospitality was unexpected, but it did not take long for xis to make ourselves at home. "Busily, the good ladies moved among the boys, serving in splendid style a delicious luncheon. Of the boys it was demanded they submit to having hav-ing buttons sewed on; mending done on uniforms, and the boys bashfully consented to the operations. And so tho boys passed tho day, well entertained enter-tained by the ladies and cheerfully appreciative ap-preciative of the kindness extended to them. The evening that followed passed with music and singing by members of the organization. In graceful grace-ful stye the ladles took their soldier partners for a dance. The boys were eager for such amusements. The punch and cakes must have appeared mild to them for the servings of both wero quickly exhausted, but were just as soon refilled. "Tho kindness of the ladies will long be remembered by the boys of Battery E and all of tho 83rd field artillery. They left Ogden rather unwillingly, but with the memory of such kindly treatment would enliven their spirits for tho rest of their long western journey jour-ney and tho thought of it would be a pleasant relief, looking to a future dark with tho vision of tho trench. Respectfull yours, Pvt. C. VIgdor, Battery Bat-tery E, 83rd F. A., Camp Fremont, Palo Alto, Cal." |
