The department desires to establish sixteen stations, thirteen of ihem on the Atlantic coast and three on the gulf coast. Definite locations were not given. The coast defense plan as submitted submit-ted by the department calls for the establishment of fortifications along the coasts by which guns could be transported on railroads from one point to another to meet possible attacks. at-tacks. The house appropriations committee, to whom the request went, was in formed that there are in operation a sufficient number of aircraft to defend the coasts adequately, but that the stations are needed. Any possible air-plane air-plane attacks that could be made would probably come from collapsible airplanes carried by submarines. Operation of observation balloons would be largely for signal purposes. |
