Show SOLDIER SAVES GIRL FROM CLUTCHES OF A WOMAN Retha Henry, tho 16-year old girl, who was taken from the companionship companion-ship of a woman on June 2 by a United States soldier and turned over to Sheriff Sher-iff Peterson, has been given Into the custody of Mrs H. H Spencer, who will make an effort to secure a good home for the girl until her parents can be heard from. According to the story told the sheriff, sher-iff, Miss Henry started from her home In Salt Creek, Wyo., to go to Denver. Her parents have their consent to this trip, she said, and she had money enough to cover her expenses She left Salt Creek with a woman of that town. When they got to Denver she says, the woman Insisted on taking her on to San Francisco and purchased a ticket tick-et for her to the California town They started from Denver on the train and were in the same car with a small party of U. S soldiers. When the train got to Ogden, one of these soldiers, Private R. Trowbridge, insisted that the young girl accompany accom-pany him to the sheriff s office. Private Trowbridge told the sheriff that he had overheard the woman and girl talking on the train and from their conversation was convinced the woman wom-an intended taking Miss Henry' lo San Francisco to place her in an Improper house. He said he decided that he could not allow the scheme to be carried car-ried out and took upon himself the responsibility re-sponsibility of taking the young girl from the company of the woman and turning her over to the sheriff. Sheriff PeteTSOO has telegraphed to tho girl's parents at Salt Creek, but has not heard from them. This morning morn-ing he took occasion to commend the action of the soldier in saving the girl from what would probably have been a terrible fate Trowbridge continued on to the coast after turning the girl over to the sheriff and has not been heard from since, although Sheriff Peterson says he would like to find him to thank him for his manly action |
