Show STORES ARE TO KEEP OPEN UNTIL 9 P.M., SATURDAYS A canvass of ten Ogden business houses this morning, when Interviews were sought on the proposition of closing at 7 p. m., Saturday, brought out the almost general declaration that all were in favor of the proposal, if it could be made to include all merchants. mer-chants. There was some opposition to the 7 p m. closing hour from an Ogden men's clothing store proprietor, who declared that the men's clothing stores were obligated to working people who could not do their shopping until after aft-er 6 or 7 p. m on Saturdays and depended de-pended on the extra hours. The recommendation rec-ommendation of 9 p m. as the closing clos-ing hour made by Commissioner Jensen Jen-sen of the department of public economy, econ-omy, this merchant said, coincided with the policy of his store and had been found favorable. The majority of the merchants visited vis-ited favored the 7 p. in. closing proposition propo-sition because of the extra time it would give their clerks and also on account ac-count of the small saving in light. The sentiment was almost unanimous, however, how-ever, that the measure would be fruit less unless all of the merchants would consent to close at that, hour, especially espe-cially among the stores in the two principal business blocks of the city. Several of the merchants stated that they had undertaken to close individually individ-ually on Saturday night at an. earlier hour, to see if their example would not be followed by other tradesmen but that after closing for two or three weeks at 7 p. m , while others remained remain-ed open, they decided it would be unfair un-fair to themselves to continue the practice. From the interviews gained this morning, it was evident that a need exists for some organization to take hold of the matter and find out just what the Ogdcn merchants intend to do with the early closing proposition if thoy are in favor of it to gain their consent to the measure and their faithful faith-ful support of it, or if they are Indifferent, Indif-ferent, to sound them out and drop further agitation. The three months of summer would be an especially opportune op-portune time during which to put the practice into operation, but if any action ac-tion is taken it will have to be done quickly. |
