The German laboring class is for peace because it has suffered more from the war than any other section of the German population popu-lation This statement was made on February 2G in the reichstag by Deputy Herzfeld, independent Socialist, during dur-ing the discussion of a Socialist motion mo-tion requesting that the reichstag ex-erolse ex-erolse its right aud demand the release re-lease from imprisonment during the rr-ichstag session of Deputy YVilhelm Dlttmann, a Socialist. Deputy Dittmann was arrested for his activities in connection with the recent strike in Berlin and other parts of Germany and sentenced to several years' imprisonment. Strike Caused by Despair. The January' strike, Deputy Herzfeld Herz-feld declared, was caused by the despair of the workingmen that there would be no early peace, the laboring class having gained t b Impression from the Prcst-Litovsk negotiations that the annexationists controlled the government's policies. During the strike, he added, the newspapers of tho working class had been gagged and representatives of the workingmen had been thrown into prison whenever they were not sent to the trenches.
