Show SEALS VICTORS OVER OAKLAND: Martin Allows Three Runs in First Inning and Seals Take the Game 5 to 1. SAN FRANCISCO. April 2. The! San Francisco Seals, pennant winners of 1917, opened the new season today by defeating the Oaks, 5 to 1. Indian I Smith twirled for he Seals, and al-I though he allowed as many hits as his teammates gathered off Speed Martin, lbs kept them well scattered. j Martin, who is probably Oakland's, best bet, got off to a bad star!, and I with the Oaks contributing plenty of errors, he allowed three runs to get across in the first Inning. After that I he steadied down and the champions , had a hard time easing over a couple more tallies in the fourth and fifth. The big chief pitched a steady game from the very start and was never ml danger. His support was perfect and at the bat the Seals grouped their bin-gles bin-gles well Hawks batted for Martin in the ninth and put over a fast two-bagger, but that was as far as it went. Foul others registered two-baggers. Hum mell and O'Doul for the Seals and Mil ler and Middleton for the Oaks. The box score: Oakland.
