Show OPPORTUNITY ROOM WILL BE ESTABLISHED ATMADISONSCHOOL FOR ABNORMAL CHILDREN Ono of the innovations in tho grade schools of Ogdea city for this year which, it is expected, will develop into one of the most valued departments of the system, is an opportunity room for atypical children. This opportunity room will be established at the Madison Madi-son school and will be in charge of Miss Dorothy Knott, who has had special training for this kind of work. Equipment to record mental tests and teach sub-normal or atypical children will be furnished. Another feature of this year's curriculum cur-riculum is to be extensive kindergarten kindergar-ten work. Children of four 'nnd one-half one-half years and over are eligible for this work. Physical training will play a prominent promi-nent part this year also, according to Supt. H. C. Johnson, who issued a statement today telling of some of tho work planned. Mr. Johnson said: ' The Elementary School. "Kindergartens will be opened at the Grant, Madison, Pingree, Mound Fort, and at other schools, If the room permits, and a sufficient number of children apply. "Children who are four nnd one-half, years will bo admitted, though tha kindergarten director must reserve the right to decline to admit any child who seems too immature to profit by the kindergarten exercises. "The kindergarten sessions will be from 9 to 11:30 for the forenoon division, divis-ion, and from I to 3:30 for the afternoon after-noon division. "The kindergarten directors are well trained in modern kindergarten work, graduates of colleges and teachers of fine experience. "The work of grados 1 to 4 will be a thorough education in the fundamental funda-mental branches. Special emphasis will be placed on effective methods of study, thus developing clear, logical thinking and thoroughness in the subjects sub-jects that serve as the foundation of our education. s Vocational Work. Manual training and sewing will be taught in the fifth and sixth grades. Tho courses in this work are arrang ed to help the child in its relation to home work and war work. It will be closely co-ordinated with the academic subjects. The problems of the shop will be used for the formal work of arithmetic and language. Physical Training. Much attention will- be given to the child's health. It is vitally Important that our schools henceforth include physical training in the curriculum. It may be excusable that It was left to the first draft to discover the 34 per cent of the physical incompetent in the male population between 21 and 30 years of age. The draft machinery of the coming year will discover the physical phy-sical incompetence of the boys eighteen, eigh-teen, nineteen and twenty years of age; but wTe must not let the spplendid procession of boys and girls of Ogdon march on to the terrible and searching search-ing realities of the next few years without doing all in our power to give them . the best possible physical: growth. Miss Gladys Titley will be the , school nurse, and will devote her full , time to the work. She will co-operate with teachers and the physical director direc-tor in creating a healthy environment for all the children in school. Room for Atypical Children. "An opportunity room will be organized or-ganized at the Madison schpol fori chilaron who may nave been Handicapped Handi-capped in their development. Miss Dorothy Knott, who has had special training for this kind of work will be in charge of this room. Children from j any part of the city will be admitted to this room. This room will have special equipment to carry on mental tests. Junior High School By a study of the junior high school course, it will be noted that it provides pro-vides a larger opportunity for choice of subjects, while not lessening in the least the preparation to meet all the requirements for more advanced work in the high school and for entrance to tho university. The new course in the junior and senior high schools is continuous, making it practically a six years' high school. Senior High School. "The courses for senior high school are definitely named. Several improvements improve-ments have been made. Courses of study will be more practical and more timely. "The modern language, Latin . and English courses will be essentially literature lit-erature courses for extensive reading. Moro library work and individual reading will be provided. "History classes will be much more closely connected with political, social so-cial and industrial problems of the day. "Science courses will be given with emphasis upon the problems of real life rather than laboratory work, as such. "Several new courses are designed to help train directly for war service. serv-ice. Vocational Course. "Vocational work will be emphasized. empha-sized. Most of the courses are for two years. In domestic science, do-meHr do-meHr nrt momml trnininc. median!- I cal drawing, commercial designing, agriculture, elementary science, the Iwork will comply with the request of tho federal government as provided in the Smith-Hughes bill. Through the provisions of this bill tho high school will secure financial help so as to make it possible to give courses that will permit pupils in vocational courses to attend school part time and work part time- The high schbol i is anxious to co-operate with employ-t employ-t ers who 'are willing to allow boys or girls to attend school part of the time during the week. Commercial Courses. "Commercial work in typewriting, stenography, bookkeeping will receive attention, especially through real office of-fice experience. This department is well equipped to meet the demands for expert business education. Tho text books used and equipment installed will make it possible to give all the course for modern 'business training. School Buildings. "During tho year 191S Ogden city has made a most phenomenal growth in school building and school equipment. equip-ment. In that time the school system has enlarged by adding to Its plant the new north junior high school, which" Is an up to date junior high school with fine auditorium, (gymna- i slum, and shower bathB in , addition to the regular school building. The ! Lewis building has been completely remade, adding ta gymnasium, study hall, and a number of new rooms. The Madison school has been rebuilt and Is- now an ideal grade building with twenty-two rooms and three shops. The Five Points school was remodeled, installing a modern heating plant and ventilating system. When school opens this fall the new building at West Og den will bo occupied. This is a one-story one-story building, and modern in every way The Dee and Quincy schools , have been repaired during tho summer, sum-mer, making them practically new buildings, up to date and modern in every way.
