Show UTAH SOLDIERS NE BEIi WELL FED IN CAMP Many comments have beon heard aso the manner in which Uncle Sam feeds the soldier boys in camp, training train-ing for their chance at tho kaiser. It is well known that while the boys do not recoivo tho luxuries they wero accustomed ac-customed to at home, they "arc being well fed. Tho Standard is in receipt of a letter from Edwin S. Nelson, mess sergeant of Battery B, In which he gives some first hand information on the manner of feeding the boys from home. The letter follows: ! Camp Kearny, Oct. 14. "Editor of Tho Standard. ' I "Dear Sir: I thought you might be interested in knowing how the boys are eating since leaving Utah. "I havo heard It said that a change of cllmato will increase one's appetite, but until now I havo had no opportun ity of trying It out. But say, 11 certainly cer-tainly works fine. "When wo first got here I was told to order rations for seven days. I did, the same amount as at Fort Douglas, Doug-las, but lo and behold, they lasted ua but four days. So with what little we had on hand and what 1 managed to buy in town, tho newly acquired appetites of tho men couldn't be coped with. i "For dinner lost Sunday we had veal roast, dressing, brown gravy, mashed potatoes, bread, lemonade and ice cream. At this meal they had more than they could get away with. "Forty-seven drafted men were added add-ed to the battery last Monday, for we : don't know how long, but that will not bother us any. From now on we I will endeavor to tako tho wrinkles out. I even if wo have tcr go over our allow-1 ance for a month at least. ! "We have a large dining hall, seat-! ing 250 men. At present this Is the . only battory hpro sotting tables for the men, thus doing away with stand 1 ing in lino with mens kits in hand. H also docs away with the washing of tho mess kits by each soldier, thus ' saving them much time. It makes it harder for the "K. P.'s" (kitchen police) po-lice) though, as they have to wash all tho dishes, In addition to the poto. ' pans, etc. , "In tho kitchen wo have a largo refrigerator, re-frigerator, two sinks and a dandy double dou-ble gas range. The pantry and store ! room are adjoining. If eating is any indication of health, then the 225 men I wo feed aro the healthiest in tho j world. Lieutenant Glasmann is our mess officer." I |
