Show WAR TAX GOES INTO! EFFECT AT MIDNIGHT' TONIGHT Beginning with midnight tonight, all shippers, all passengers and all users of the railroads for business or pleasure pleas-ure will bo called upon to help Uncle Sam win the war by the payment of a tax. This tax applies to steam roads, electric roads, truck lines and. in fact, ovory kind of transportation by motive power. Each sum paid for tho transportation of property, regardless of the amount, will bo taxed. For instance, if the charges on a cortaiu shipment of goods amounts to 49 cents or less, tpo railroad rail-road company, or other common carrier car-rier accepting the payment of the-charges the-charges will be required to collect one cent war tax on the charges and report re-port and remit tills one cent. The only on-ly exceptions to this tax aro the government gov-ernment shipments. On passenger fares, the measure of the tax is olght per cent. This applies to all faros except under two conditions. condi-tions. Those buying tickets for continuous con-tinuous trips where the fare Is 35 cents or less will not be required to pay the tax. Thoso having season or commutation commu-tation tickets for trips less than thirty miles will not be subject to the tax. In buying mileage, commutation and season books or tickets, tho amount will be assessed at the time the charges charg-es are paid. But in selling scrip books aftor today, agents are Instructed not to collect tho tax, but leave It for the conductor as he detaches the amount required for each trip. Regarding tickets bought previous to November 1, but being sod after that dato, the law provides that no tax shall be collected. But if the book was bought but not used prior to that date, it will not be accepted for passage pass-age until the tax is paid. That means that if a person buys a ticket today, for instance, but does not begin his Journey Journ-ey until tomorrow, his ticket will not be honored by conductors until lie shows them he has paid the tax. However, How-ever, this part of the law does not apply ap-ply to scrip and mileage books, as outlined out-lined above. Inquiries have been received at local ticket offices as lo stop-over privileges after November 1. It is understood un-derstood from the law that if the holder of a ticket clearly shows that It was bought and used before this date, the tax does not apply and ho may use the ticket as indicated at the time It was issued lo him. If a ticket includes Pullman or parlor car reservations, an additional 10 per cont will be collected on tho amount of those reservations. The rate on excess baggage will be the rate applied to amounts paid for shipments made by .express, that Is, one cent for each 20 cents or fraction paid for the transportation of excess baggage. That is to say, If the charge for excess baggage is 20 cents or less, It will cost one cent extra to ship it If tho charge is 40 cents or less, the tax will be two cents, and so on. , The tax on freight is 3 per cent of the amount paid as freight charges, regardless of the amount Those who have outstanding freight bills will have to pay them before midnight tonight, to-night, or the tax will be assessed on theso bills. The amount of tax must be shown on each bill of lading or prepaid pre-paid ticket. However, tho tax will not apply to freight for which the entire transit service was performed prior to November Novem-ber 1, to prepaid shipments in transit at midnight, October 31, or to freight charges uncollected on freights received re-ceived "collect," provided this freight ho received beforo midnight tonight. For the benefit of those having free transportation on the railroads, the statement Is made that this transportation transpor-tation is not taxable. Thero is no tax upon charges for storage or parking cars. Thero is no tax on the storage of 'baggage. If the charges on a shipment of freight amount to $7.90, the tax will bo 24 cents and $8.14 will be collected- If the charges are 49 cents or less, the tax will be 1 cent: if it be 50 cents, tho tax will bo 2 cents. oo |
