Show ! FATHER GUILTY OF KILLING IS CHILD CAMBRIDGE. Mass., Oct. 12 Joseph Wakolin, of Melrose, was last night found guilty of manslaughter on account ac-count of the dctlvof his daughter, Lor-etta. Lor-etta. seven years of age. His wife Sarah who had been on trial with him on the same charge was acquitted. The jury deliberated nearly eight hours. Sentence will be pronounced pro-nounced Tuesday morning. The maximum max-imum penalty for manslaughter in this state is twenty years Imprisonment. Wakelin and his wife were originally indicted for murder, but when they were placed on trial, District Attorney Tufts had the charge changed to manslaughter. man-slaughter. The state contended that when Loretta, or "Tootsie" as she was called, was sent home from school on the morning of June 1, 1916, for a book she had forgotten she objected to returning re-turning to school, and that in a fit of anger Wakelin seized her more forcibly forci-bly than he intended and choked her to death. Then, in order to divert suspicion, sus-picion, according to the state's allegation, allega-tion, he mutilated the child's body and concealed it in the woods near his home in Melrose, so as to make it appear ap-pear that his daughter had been the victim of a degenerate. oo |
