Show COLUMBIA MEN TO OPENJJEBATE Controversy Over "Academic Free Speech" to Be Threshed Out by Students. NEW YORK, Oct 12. A general meeting of the student body of Columbia Colum-bia university is .set for today in the gymnasium to consider the contror versy over "academic free speech" which has arisen as a result of the resignation of Professor Charles A. Beard from the chair of political science soon after the expulsion of Professors J. McK. Cattelle and Henry W. L. Dana. The meeting has been sanctioned by the secretary of the navy. " While the students -are preparing for their mass meeting a "committee of nine" of the faculty is preparing a memorandum for submission to the trustees in which reforms will be recommended. It was said that one of the most important recommenda-I recommenda-I tlons would be that members of the faculty who are charged with acts tending to bring discredit upon the university be not dismissed until they havo been given a trial before a jury of their fellow professors. |
