Show British Make Slight Withdrawals With-drawals at Some Points to Save Men. HUNS LOSE PRISONERS Furious Fight Raging South of Bapaume Germans Burning Burn-ing Stores. WITH Thi. BRITISh FORCES. Aug. 31. (Noon) (By the Associated I Press) Advances have been made j hero and there by British forces along tho battle front but they have been slight. Tho enemy has delivered vi-' vi-' cious countor-attneks with powerful forces south of the Arras-Cambral road. As the result of one of these 1 counter-blows tho British ' withdrew to the edge of Rinecourt-lcz-Cagni- court. The Germans also arc in somd strength south of tho railway below Bullccourt and they now are being attacked at-tacked by the British. The outskirts of Ecoust-SL Moin from where the British also retired lato yesterday again are being attacked. On both sides of the river Scarpe on the Arras frpnt there have been heavy counter-attacks delivered, apparently ap-parently by fresh troops. Here, as elsewhere, the British have maintained thoir gains only by retiring slightly where a few yards aro not as valuable as lives and where opportunity" has been offered to inflict heavy casualties casual-ties on the enemy. In all these places many Germans were killed and wounded and they lost a considerable number of prisoners. Plouvain on the north of tho Scarpe now has been completely cleared of tho enemy. Ground Gained South of the Scarpe. South of tho river, ground has been gained in the direction of Eterpigny and Hamlin-les-Pres. South of Bapaume hard fighting continues and more ground has been captured by tho British. Between Bapaume and the Somme tho British are attacking near Mariennes wood which is strongly held by the enemy. Germans Start Withdrawal. In the north tho recent British successes suc-cesses have apparently caused the j Germans to start a withdrawal ex- l tending roughly from the neighborhood neighbor-hood of Kemmel through the region of Bethuue, and this morning the British Brit-ish lines appeared to bc progressing rapidly on the heels of the enemy. ' While the salient here is gradually ' ! becoming more shallow, the enemy is retiring and applying the torch to his stores and demolishing what remains of the houses. Bailleul In British Hands. Bailleul is now completely in British Brit-ish hands and patrols are on Mont de Lille. Tho advanced British also have apparently reached points well to the east of La Couture and Lavel Cha-pelle. Cha-pelle. Patrols are reported to be in Pra-noutre Pra-noutre and on the Scherpcnb.erg fronL Southwest of Ypres enemy trenches have been crossed without opposition, i Enemy trenches running through I Breis and extending both to the north j and the south are strongly held by j tho Germans, indicating that at least ; for a time the enemy intends to try f to hold on to the east bank of the I river.
