Show ! HAYWOOD SENTENCED ! TO 20YEARS. When "Big Bill" Haywood and fourteen four-teen other leaders of the I. TV. W. were sentenced by Judge K. M. Lan-dls Lan-dls to twenty years In the federal penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kan., and fined $20,000 each, the American people had cause to rejoice. No body of men calling themselves Americans ever performed so many acts of disloyalty as did the I. W. V following our doclaratlonof war. Had the Industrial Workers who should be called Industrial Loafers been German spies they could not have done more to retard America's preparations prep-arations on entering the conflict. The 1- W. W. is an organization as unworthy of a placo in this country as the anarchists. In fact, the Industrial Indus-trial Workers are anarchists. They have no upbuilding policy. Their one aim is to break down and destroy. Heywood was at the head of the I. W. W. and as loader Is held responsible respon-sible for (he outrages committed by his organization. He was in Winne-mucca, Winne-mucca, Nev-, during Debs' protest and was drawn to the gold mining camp of Kennedy in an effort to make a livelihood- Later he became nssociat-jed nssociat-jed with Moyer, Pettlbone and the oth-'or oth-'or leaders of the Western Federation of Miners, and was identified with the Cripple Creek riots and the assassina-itlon assassina-itlon of Governor Stcunenberg of Idaho. In his earlier years, "Bill" Haywood Hay-wood was not a bad man, but his na- . turo was soured by what he considered consid-ered tho hopeless struggle of the laboring la-boring men of the country. Ho fought against the crimes of the mine owners and finally allowed himself to he-come he-come criminally minded. He failed to realize that eventually right must prevail, and, instead gave himself up to sabotage. That was his undoing. nn |
