Show OGDEN'S FORWARD PUSH No city, in these turbulent times, is building more firmly and solidly for the future than is Ogden. Notwithstanding the war is drawing on the community's resources in men and money, there is expansion in all our industries. Nothing developed during tho year though has given more promise of adding to Ogden's importa ice than the decision of the Globe Milling & Grain company, with unlimited capital, to make Ogden the flour manufacturing city of the west. Wlicn work starts Monday on the concrete elevator, where 1,100,000 bushels of grain are to be stored, the last form will not bo laid until the company has expended in Ogden $750,-000 $750,-000 and has created permanent employment em-ployment for 75 to 100 men. There are to be 40 tanks, each 25 feet in diameter and 100 feet high; an elevator or work house equivalent to ten stories, 150 feot high, and a flour mill six stories, the most modern mill In the west, with a capacity of 2500 barrels a day. Then there are to be warehouses and office buildings. Few, perhaps, realize what this means bb a force in the upbuilding of Ogden. Not only will a largo new pay roll be established, but out of Ogden will go buyers covering the vast wheat fields of the west and farmers will look to this place as a market for their products. Also tho freight tonnage of I Ogden will be greatly Incroasod, male ing this anobjectlvo for more than one railroad not now in Utah territory- By tho way, farmers are being drawn to Ogdenby moro than one magnet. mag-net. Two years ago this city did not have the gront sales which are bringing bring-ing thousands of horses to tho local yards. At that time the Utah Cereal company was not In existence and tho Ogden Packing & Provision company ( had not enlarged to Its present large dimensions. The stock yards woro not established on the elaborate scale of today and the Holley Milling company com-pany was not in tho field. The Ogden Iron works had not expanded. Those seven industries should bo foundation sufficient on which to build a city. Our canning plants are becoming more Important. We were not manufacturing ovor-alls; ovor-alls; garments and other clothing a few fears ago. Today the Scowcroft plant employs 150 skilled workers. The American Can factory is a now establishment with a large pay roll. Looking back, tho thought occurs that Ogden suddenly has eniorged from a position of local importance to a-pre-eminent place in the manufacturing manufac-turing interests of the west. This is now the factory center of one of tho most productive regions in the United States. |
