WIN IN CONTESTS Before an audience that filled the Tabernacle almost to capacity, representatives repre-sentatives of the "Weber and Ogden stakes won the Northern division of the Mormon church M. I. A. special activities league contests in public speaking and quartet singing. Ben Young of the Weber stake won the public -speaking contest, tho Weber stake quartet, the male quartet contest, con-test, and the Ogden stake quartot, the Ladles quartet contest. The winners will go to Salt Lake on .Tune 8, to compete in the final contests for the church championship. The first contest Btaged last night was that of public speaking, the contestants con-testants and subjects being as follows: fol-lows: Miss Lamont Poulter (Ogden. stake) "The Difcle Standard." MIbb Urva Horsley (Bear River stake), "Mother Love." George Balrd (Boxelder stake), "Power of Thought." Ben Young (Weber stake), "World Wide Peace." George Baird was awarded second place. The judges were Supt E.S. Hinckley of the Utah State Industrial school; B. C. Call of Erlgham City and Alva L. Scovllle of Ogden. In the ladles quartet contest, next staged, quartets from the Ogden, Weber, Web-er, North Weber and Summit stakes competed The Weber stake quartet was awarded second place. Quartets from the Weber, Ogden and North Weber stakes participated ln the male quartet contest and finished fin-ished in the order named The judges jud-ges were Joseph Scoville and Mrs. John Culley of Ogden and Howard Anderson of Salt Lake. Prof. David J. Wilson of the Weber academy presided over the meeting as chairman and In his closing remarks re-marks praised all of the contestants for tho excellence of their singing and speaking. |
