Show BOARD OF EDUCATION REVIEWS NEEDS OF SCHOOL Following a two-hour conference, the city board of education held a brief executive session last night, passiup: only upon matters that seemed seem-ed to require immediate attention. A reply to the recent criticism or his act in purchasing trees for Arbor Day planting at the Lewis school without the authorization of the school board, was received from Principal Prin-cipal John W. Wintlo and filed. Mr. Wintle explained that he believpd he had but followed a long established custom and said that if tlfe board did not justify tho expenditure, the bill would be paid by himself and students of the school. Principal J. B. Beeson, in a communication, com-munication, requested permission for the high school cadets to begin their annual encampment in Ogden valley on May 25 and that guns for drill under un-der the direction of Capt. Knoass and Lieut. Wallace, be secured from the federal government before that time. The communication was referred to the president of the board and tho law committee, with power to act. An invitation, extended through Supt. J M. Mills, to attend a banquet at i he University of Utah, on the night of Mav 12, was accepted by the board. The date Is State High School Day and a further request of Supt. Mills that the Ogden high school be closed for that ovent. was acranted. The school board also granted the request of the principals of the throe junior high schools to close those institutions on May 19. for the annual track and field meet Bids for next year's school supplies were received and turned over to the clerk for tabulation and the resolution resolu-tion preparod at the special board meeting Tuesday, night, calling upon the county commissioyers for the amount of city taxes due the Bchool system, was adopted. The needs or ihe schools are $160,500 for support and maintenance, $8,700 interest cjn bonds, and $4200 sinking fund. The $160,500 is included in the total of $242,000 needed to support the school system for a year. 375,000 of which is due from the state district funds, and $6500. from the state high school funds |
