Show REAR ADMIRAL VON POHLDEAD Commander of German Fleet Dies Soon After Retirement From Active Service. Berlin. Feb. 24, via London, 9:30 a. m. Rear Admiral Von Pohl, whose retirement on account of 111 health from the position of commander of the German battle fleet was announced an-nounced two days ago, has died In Berlin. Hugo Von Pohl was born at Bres-lau Bres-lau on August 25, 1865. He received a commission aa lieutenant at the age of 21 and at the ago of 24 he was made senior lieutenant and placed in command of the Corvette Corola. He was promoted to the rank of commander in 1894 and four years later to that of Captain. He was made a commodore in tho now navy in 1905 and a vice admiral in 1909 and was made admiral on January Janu-ary 27, J913. He saw active service in command of tho cruiser Hanaa at - mmmm ' - -'- the bombardment of the Taku forts, China, in 1900. Made Commander In 1915. Vice Admiral Von Pohl was appointed ap-pointed chief of the admiralty staff with headquartere at Wilhemshaven in 1909. In February, 1915, he succeeded suc-ceeded Admiral Von Ingenohl as commander com-mander of the German battle fleet and a Berlin dispatch dated February Febru-ary 22, last, announced his retirement retire-ment from that position and the appointment ap-pointment of Vice Admiral Reinhardt Sc-heer to succeed him. A few weeks previously it was stated that Admiral von Pohl had been decorated with the Order of the Red Eagle with the ObI- Leaves and Swords, in recognition recogni-tion of his distinguished services. |
