Show ROOSEVELT OUT FOR PRESIDENCY Candidacy Has Been Announced An-nounced by Delegates in Two States. Springfield, 111., Feb. 11. Theodore Roosevelt was declared to be the preference pre-ference of three candidates for delegate dele-gate to the Republican national convention con-vention in petitions filed here today wjth Secretary fcf State Lewis G. Stevenson. Two of tho men are from the Eighteenth district, tho homo of "Uncle Joe" Cannon. Washington, Feb. 11. The opening gun In Theodore Roosevelt's candidacy candi-dacy for president on the Republican ticket was fired here today. It came with the announcement by Grafton D. dishing, Charles Sumner Bird, Representative A. P Gardner and State Senator Robert M. Washburn Wash-burn of their candidacy for delegates at large to tho Republican national convention from Massachusetts oh an uncompromising Roosevelt ticket. There was as much surprise over the personnel of this ticket as there was over the announcement that it was a Roosevelt slate. There was a combination of divulgent political ole-ments ole-ments seen that was heralded by Roosevelt supporters as a Btrlklng evidence of the coalition of Republicans Republi-cans and Progressives In Massachusetts. Massachu-setts. It was Indicated that movements similar to this are expected In other states. There was general agreement taht Roosevelt had gained strong support in that state. Three of the four candidates candi-dates on this ticket have at various times been candidates for governor of Massachusetts. Grafton D. dishing has been a regular reg-ular Republican. He has served as speaker of the Massachusetts legislation legisla-tion and as lieutenant governor. He was a candidate for tho nomination for governor against former Congressman Congress-man Samuel W. McCall and lost by only 5000 out of a total vote of 150,000. He was a Taft delegate In 1912 Charles Sumner Bird entered politics poli-tics In 1912 and had been an uncompromising uncom-promising Progressive As candldato for governor on a straight Progressive ticket In 1912 he polled 125,000 votes and won second place for his party. Representative Gardner led the fight for Taft In Massachusetts in 1912 and fought Roosevelt with ardor. He was a candidate for governor against Mr Bird In 1913 and was led by Bird by 9000 votes. State Senator Washburn has been allied with the regular Republicans At one time he was Mr. Cushlng's most formidable rh'al for tho speakership speaker-ship of the Massachusetts house before be-fore going to the senate he was chairman chair-man of the ways and means and railroads rail-roads committees Senator Washburn recently announced his Intention of supporting Roosevelt for the presidency, presi-dency, following that with the announcement an-nouncement today of Ins candidacy for a place on a Roosevelt delegation to the Chicago convention. |
