Show U. OF LI STUDENTS RETAIN ATHLETICS Vote to Keep Coach and Intercollegiate Inter-collegiate Sports Strong Speeches Made. Salt Lake, Feb. 12. The blood of 500 men of the University of Utah boiled with indignation yesterday when the student body was "gathered together at the request of President J. T. Kingsbury, to determine whether wheth-er or not they desired to continue intercollegiate in-tercollegiate athletics and if they still wished the board of regents to hire a coach. Needless to say, the vote was for a coach and Intercollegiate contests, although there were some brilliant speeches made to abnndon intercollegiate athletics until such a time that the students should appreciate appre-ciate them. There was an attempt on the part of a few students to shift the blame for the lack of spirit into the coach, but this was quickly squashed by the student body when the resolutions were voted upon. Several athlotes quickly Jumped to their feet and defended de-fended Nelson H. Norgren when his name waB brought into the mess. Athletes Voice Opinions. "Let's hire a dancing master and do away with lhtercollegiato athletics," declared Lowell Romnoy, a four-letter athlete. "All that I have sacrificed for intercollegiate in-tercollegiate athletics has been a few cigarets and an hour or two at pool a day," added Romney when it was stated that a student must sacrifice everything for athletics. James Lillle, a football man, declared de-clared he had attended football practice prac-tice and, although carrying a senjor course in the engineering school, with many hours of laboratory, said ho had not suffered in scholastic standing because of the time spent on the gridiron. Stephen Kerr, president of the freshman class, urged that a more efficient ef-ficient management of athletics was pssential at tho university, that an alumni manager should be appointed and that students ought to have more voice in running their activities than at the present time. Steve Love, in a short address, blamed the faculty for tho downtrodden downtrod-den spirit on the oast bench. oo |
