Show OODEN EXAMINER 18 CALLED DOWN BY THE SCHOOL BOARD Resolutions Passed Calling for a Reporter Who Will Furnish a Correct Report of School Board Meetings Mills Granted Grant-ed Leave of Absence With Full Pay, Provided He Meets His Own Expenses Mills Confesses He Wants to Go Back East and Learn Something. A bombshell was thrown into the school board meeting last evening when the following resolution was introduced in-troduced and unanimously adopted, asking the Ogden Examiner to send some other reporter to report the meetings of the school board: The Resolution: "Whereas, during the last six weeks there have appeared in the local columns col-umns of the Morning Examiner erroneous er-roneous and misleading statements concerning proceedings of Sie Board of Education of this city; now, therefore, there-fore, be it "Resolved, that the Clerk of this Board ask the manager of said Examiner Ex-aminer to assign a reporter to attend the meetings of this Board, who will furnish said paper with a correct statement state-ment of the proceedings of the meeting meet-ing of' this Board." The public will remember that the Standard repeatedly called attention to the Tact that the local report by the Ogden Examiner of the meetings of the school board were false and misleading, so much so that the public pub-lic commented upon the different views presented by- the Standard and Examiner. Tho T3xaminer reporter reported everything as if Superintendent Superintend-ent Mills was riding roughshod over the school board, while the Standard's rejiort was the reverse After the above resolution was passed by the board of education last night the managing man-aging editor of the Examiner was notified noti-fied of the passage of the resolution and he immediately called upon the school board members who had adjourned ad-journed from the school office to the Weber club. After an hour and a half interview between the Examiner's managing editor and the school boara members, in which the Examiner claimed the school board should have called the Examiner's attention to the alleged misrepresentations maintaining maintain-ing that tho paper would promptly have corrected the same, an agreement agree-ment was entered into between the board and the managing editor of the Examiner by which the board agreed to withdraw the resolution on condition condi-tion that the Examiner assign another reporter to the school board meetings and that the reporter by the name of Gates should no longer report any school meetings for the Ogden Examiner. Exam-iner. Accordingly, the clerk of the school board was instructed to with draw the resolution and not to enter the same on the records, but a Standard Stand-ard man saw the resolution before it was withdrawn from the official minutes, min-utes, and we publish it in full as above given. Under ordinary conditions, the Standard would not have reproduced the resolution, but o'wing to the fact that the reports between the Examln-r Examln-r and Standard have been directly at narinnnp nnrl ns snmfl npnnlp were In doubt as to which report was true and accurate, the Standard feels it is justi fied in placing this story before the people In order to show that the Standard reports were true and correct. cor-rect. The Standard fully realizes that a newspaper reporter often can place a newspaper in bad light. The Standard Stand-ard has had experience in that line and knows that reporters have at times positively misrepresented. Such reporters were not long retained in the Standard's service. We do not hold the Examiner management or its owners responsible for the misrepresentations misrepre-sentations made by this individual reporter re-porter because it appears they implicitly implic-itly trusted Reporter Gates, and in view of the fact that the Examiner promised the School Board that they would put a stop to further misrepresentation; misrepre-sentation; that they would not permit it, if they knew it, we are Inclined to judge the Examiner by Its future action ac-tion In regard to the matter and take It on its good faith. The owner, proprietor pro-prietor or manager of a newspaper cannot personally Inspect each news Item and investfgate it before publication. publi-cation. He must trust his numerous employes. For that reason the Stand-trd Stand-trd prefers to believe that the reporter on his own responsibility misrepresented misrepre-sented the news In favor of Mr. Mills and against the school board. Moral, get the Standard if you want the news truthfully told. Further Proceedings of the Board. With a brief motion, the city board of education last night granted Supt. J M. Mills leave of absence to attend the annual convention of Superintendents Superintend-ents to be held at Detroit, Feb. 22 to 26, providing that the official make the trip at his own expense. The motion brought a response from Mr. Mills just before the adjournment adjourn-ment of the meeting, in the following communication. Mills' Communication. "Gentlemen Admitting that you have no other desire than to work for the upbuilding of the schools, and confessing that this is my only ambition, am-bition, T am ready, willing and anxious to accept of your kindness and be your representative in Detroit, paying my own expenses, on the one proviso that you will allow me to put what I learn there into effective operation in Ogden, or else there is no reason for my going. As a safeguard to you. however, I would be willing that my plans before being adopted should be submitted to any fair body of people, either principals, teachers or residents resi-dents of Ogden or some other place, or any body of educators. With these provisions I shall gladly pay my own expenses and go. Respectfully. "JOHN M. MILLS, "Superintendent." Aside from a remark by Director F, E. Williams, that the communication communica-tion should not bo answered at tho present time, it was -filed without discussion. dis-cussion. Water Meters. A reply to tho request of tho school directors made a week ago, that the , city commissioners authorize the plac-i plac-i ing of water meters In the school buildings, was read at the- meeting. It contained a recommendation from the head of the city waterworks department de-partment to the city commission, that i the request bo granted provided the j school board would have all pipes ex- tended in the buildings so that the meters could be placed ahead of all hydrants or taps and that the water inspector be provided with a key to each building. Moving Picture Money. "A communication from Rudle Malt-zan, Malt-zan, a local resident, on the question of installing a printing plant at the high school, including a price list of equipment, was submitted to the school board and referred to the teachers' committee R. L. Tomlinson, boiler inspector of the school system, reported having completed his regular Inspection, finding find-ing the boilers in all of the school heating plants in good condition. The request made by the Child Culture Cul-ture club some weeks ago for the refunding re-funding of the $100 invested by the club in a moving picture machine for the schools, was again brought to the attention of the board last night, by the clerk. The refund was authorized, without comment Schools Heavily In Debt. In a report made by Director Wado Johnson as to the probable financial deficit the school system would face at the end of the present term, it was estimated that about $20,000 would have to be borrowed before July 1st, to meet expenses. This finding was based on a comparative table of revenues reve-nues and expenses for last year. A petition from Captain W- E. Kneass that application be made to the United States government for military mili-tary supplies to be used by the Ogden high school cadets, was referred to Directors W. H. Williams and Wade Johnson, with power to act. The supplies sup-plies will Include arms and ammunition, ammuni-tion, which will be furnished from the national arsenals in compliance with an order of congress All the Salt Lake and Ogden morning morn-ing papers suppressed the resolution passer last night. If the board had condemned the Standard the story would have been told in big type. Why? nn |
