Show jj ' MILLARD 'PIONEER DIES IN SALT LAKE Salt Lake, Jan. 13. George W. Cropper, Crop-per, sheriff of Millard county from 1905 to 1909, one of the best known and most beloved men of his section of the country, died yesterday morning at a local hospital from hemorrhage of the brain, following 'pneumonia. The body was taken to Oasis, Utah, at 11:50 last night for funeral and burial.! Born in Madison county, Texas, In 1846, and coming to Fillmore, then the capital of the state, in 1S54, Mr. Cropper was from his young manhood to the time of his last illness actively identified with many of the projects and enterprises that marked the growth and development of the section sec-tion of the state in which he made his home. In the reclamation of the vast tract of arid lands in (Millard county he was particularly zealous and skilled, giving unsparingly of time, energy, aibllity and money for the furtherance fur-therance of plans to make waste places fertile and prosperous. He also was a moving factor ln numerous companies com-panies formed for utilizing the waters of the Sevier river, among them being the Melville Irrigation company and the Delta. Land & Irrigation company (Mr. Cropper's Ideal of citizenship was quiet and unobstrusive service to his state and country, and he lived that ideal, never seeking honors or publicity. Ho was a fearless and able Indian fighter and served with distinction dis-tinction 'during the years of the Black Hawk war, and was an honored member mem-ber of tho Black Hawk War veterans In the frontier days of Millard county coun-ty Mr. Cropper gave much time to the dangerous and necessary duty of breaking up the numerous gangs of "bad men" infesting that region. To him, probably more than to any ono other man, was due tho credit for the extermination of the notorious "Ben Tasker" gang It was through his efforts that tho Stock Protective organization or-ganization was formed in Millard countj'. Mr. Cropper is survived by seven children, three sous, Earl, Glenn and Linn; four daughters, Mrs. Sebrina Robinson, Mrs. Mattie Bliss, Miss-Mattie Miss-Mattie and Mill Mamie Cropper, all residents of Millard county. oo |
