Show FREE TRADE AND PROTECTION AFTER THE WAR. (Helena Record.) The statement is made that after , the war Germany will bo driven to a great Increase of tariff duties. But the Vorwaerts, a Socialist newspaper, thinks that these duties cannot be Increased In-creased without greatly raising the price of tho necessaries of life. So it looks rather for an abolition of many of these duties. Other authorl-' ties have predicted that Germany vculd be forced to free trade, ana that Great Britain, on the other hand, would be driven to high protection. Much of this is pure guess work, of course. And yet It is hard to see how the German government would, after the war, says another paper, dare JLo exclude ex-clude or limit the introduction froni abroad of goods that will be sorely needed for the work of reconstruction The bills will have to be paid, and it Is now admitted that this is true without reference to the possibility of indemnity. But the question is as to how the money can be raised with the least distress to the people. |
