Show AUTD TO BE USED OW RURAL ROUTES A new ruling of the United States ; postoffice department, permitting the use of automobiles on rural delivery routes, has been received by Postmas- ' ter W. W. The latest ruling is as follows- "Automobiles may be used by rural carriers in serving their routes where the topography of the country and the condition of tho roads permit of their uninterrupted use of an extended extend-ed period and the mail can be properly prop-erly conveyed, but in each case express ex-press authority for the use of an automobile au-tomobile must be obtained from the department. In requesting such authority, au-thority, postmasters shall state the months in which the route can be served with an automobile and the schedule under which the service can be performed. From January 1 19ig tho use of motorcycles and bicycles on rural routes will not be permitted (Signed) "A. S. BURLESON, "Postmaster General " A letter received with the order carried the information that motorcycle motor-cycle manufacturers were recently given a hearing which resulted in their, being asked to prepare specifications specifi-cations for a side-car arrangement These will be submitted to the post- I master general and It Is thought that their use will be permitted. |
