Show FLUE-FIGHTING TROLLEY , The onlv fire fighting trolley in the United States is in service at Duluth, Minn., as part of the equipment of the fire department. Necessity prompted promp-ted Its invention. The harbor of Duluth Du-luth is formed by a narrow strip of land extending for seven miles from the Minnesota to the Wisconsin shore of Lake Superior. The narrowness of the strip and the loose sand foundation founda-tion made It hard to reach quickly. The water was so shallow that a tug could not approach. So a car in good condition no longer used for passenger passeng-er service was obtained, the seats taken tak-en out and the braces retained. A hose box was installed the whole width of the car, open at both ends, so that no matter which way tho car is going the hose can be carried to the hydrant from both ends. Tho equipment consists of 1500 feet of 2 l-2-lnch"hose, a set of ladders, axes and pike poles, two six-gallon Bab-cock Bab-cock extinguishers, extra charges and rubber coats and hats for volunteers. |
