Show 00 i iiu muiio nioi mi CONFESSED BURGLARS Responsibility for the robbery of the home of Fred Sawyer, at Sixteenth street and Grant avenue last Saturday Satur-day afternoon, was fastened this morning upon Ed Reldy and Ray McNeil Mc-Neil through their own confession of guilt The two youtlis Reldy 'being 22 years of age and McNeil only 19 were arrested Sunday morning at Seventeenth street and Washington avenue by Sergeant C. B. Layne and Patrolman "Dick" Wootton. Their confession followed a three-day Investigation In-vestigation by Detective Robert Burk and Patrolman Wootton and only came after tho officers had secured a number of HnkB of evidence pointing almost Irrefutably to their guilt. The robbery occurred between 1 and 2 o'clock, tho Sawyer family being away from home. Mr. Sawyer discovered dis-covered signs of the visit of the robbers rob-bers about 5 o'clock, and a search revealed re-vealed the fact that the intruders had gotten away with articles of Jewelry, Including a lady's and a gentleman's gold watch, a ring sot with a ruby and two pearls, a ring set with an amethyst and two small diamonds, valued at nearly $100. They also took a pair of .Mr. Sawyer's garters, and these had considerable to do with securing se-curing the confession. The police were notified and Detectives Detec-tives Robert Chambers and Robert Burk made an Investigation. From neighbors, they secured descriptions of two men who had been seeing going go-ing through the orchard at the roar of the Sawyer home and through the fields toward the fair grounds. Their tracks were traced to the stables at the fair grounds, where they had stop-pod stop-pod to eat some food they had taken from the house. Several tablo knives and a key to the cellar of tho Sawyer homo were found there, but trace of the men was lost. Their description was .passed on to the night shift of officers and Sunday morning. Officers Layne and Wootton ran acroBs the suspects. They were coming toward the city and when the officers took them into custody, said thoy had passed tho night in a barn at Fivo Points. The officers first took them to tho fair grounds and found that their shoes fitted into the prints near the stables. This, however, failed fail-ed to wilt them in the least. Detective Burk then took up the case with Patrolman Wootton, who was changed to the day shift and other evidence was picked up. Finally, Fin-ally, the officers removed the garters Reidy was wearing and these were Identified by Mr. Sawyer. The confession con-fession followed soon afterward and this morning, Roidy and McNeil led the officers to tho Mitchell monument works, at Twenty-first Btreet and Wall avenue, where they had cached the loot, and turned the stolen articles artic-les over to them. The amethyst ring had been sold, but the other artlclea were recovered. The two men will be charged with, third degree burglary. |
