Show RUSSIANS ARE IN EASTPRUSSIA London. Jan. 30. 4:15 a. m. A Renter Ren-ter dispatch from Petrograd, dealing with the battle in East Prussia, says; The Russians occupied Pillkal-len Pillkal-len after a days' shelling. The garrison gar-rison suffered heavily before retiring. Of the. population of 6000, only 300 women and children and aged persons remained. "The Germans have strong defenses de-fenses northward of the Mazurlan lakes region to Insterburg, along the Augerapp river, but they are comparatively com-paratively weak further northward to Tilsit" London, Jan 30, 4:30 a. m. The PetrogTad correspondent of the Times, referring to the fact that Tilsit, Til-sit, East Prussia, is mentioned for the first time in connection with the Russian operations, says ho believes important operations are imminent. The correspondent says he thinks that the Nicmen river is sufficiently frozen to permit the passage of troops and artillery, which alone would suffice suf-fice to explain the movement north of Tilsit- On tho other hand, the Koenlgsberg garrison probably Is so depleted by drafts for the front west of the Vistula river that the Germans seriously menace the Russian right flank The Russian design, the correspondent correspon-dent continues, clearly Is to outflank the Germans posted In the Mazurian lake region and thus to overrun Enst Prussia. The latest Russian moves also are intended as a counter to the Austro-German concentration in tho Carpathians. |
