Show I How To Take Care of Dry I and Weak Hair In Winter 31 BY HELEN HOWE. J T la an open question as to why I one sheds more hair in winter J I than In summer but II Is a fact J! U that everyone does One aulhor- Ity upon the hair claims that It Is bo- "l cause women neglect their hair In the ij winter, relying upon the warm weather when the hair can be open 9 to the fun and air to regain Its health cmu' iuius i urn an .- w nmuvuwj worn many hours a day at receptions, recep-tions, shopping and luncheons and these are often of fur and other warm fabrics. Hats arc absolutely without ventilation, and when one Is worn In an overheated room it produces a degree de-gree of warmth and moisture which weakens the scalp tissues, shrivels the hair bulb and causes the hair to fall out. A fur hat will do more damr.Rt; to the scalp and hair during one afternoon after-noon than a month of summer treatment treat-ment can rectify." Others claim the unusual shedding In winter Is duo to living In dry heat, our rooms being kept too warm Anyway, Any-way, there Is always a brisk trade In tonics and restorers toward the end of the winter. Care, however, should be observed In selecting a tonic. For Instance, while dry hair requires an oily preparation prep-aration one must remember that a little lit-tle goes a long way. If too much is used and the oil saturates hair and scalp, the latter will grow careless land not supply the natural oil It should. The artificial oiling Is sufficient, suffi-cient, so no demand Is made of the rnl cells. Consequently, an oily tonic can work more harm than good. Only In extreme cases of dryness should oil be used, and when manipulations manip-ulations with the fingers have failed to produce the flow of natural olL H.ilr that la wpnkcnt-il Will Sllit at 'the ends. Hair in this condition should be handled very carefully while combing and dressing. To remedy splitting at the ends make a lotion containing con-taining half an ounce of sweet almond al-mond oil. one ounce of eau de cologne and one dram of resorcin Apply to the lower ends of the hair only not the scalp with a soft brush. This will strengthen and preserve the weak hair Hair is strongly electric by friction In cold or dry weather. Women possessing strongly electric hair should never use celluloid combs, a smoothly finished horn comb is better, bet-ter, as celluloid Intensifies the electricity elec-tricity In the hair, making it dry and stiff. The hair should be brushed longer at night In winter than in summer sum-mer so as to induce a flow of oil. the scalp being much dryer In winter than in summer If the hair Is kept thoroughly well brushod and free from dust frequent shampoos are quite unnecessary Except for some unusual conditions i not seen the most oily head of hair should be shampooed oftener than once in two weeks. Usually once a month la quite enough and In the rase of ery dry hair even a longer interval I say six weeks Is a Rood rule. If the hair Is very oily It may be washed oftener, but to wash dry hair frequently fre-quently will deprive it of th' natural oil scant as It Is. To my thinking there Is no hrttrr shampoo for the hair than an egg beaten up and mixed with a little water This is rubbed Into the Bcalp and this is what It does. The yolk feeds the hair with sulphur and Iron a perfect tonic and the White b Ing a mild alkali when mixed with th' natural oil In the hair forms a soap whic h cleanses scalp and hall The r-Kg Is rubbed In with the fln-cori fln-cori and pal ma of the hand and then thoroughly rinserj out again with several warm waters. If the person can stand It the last water may be ' old, as this secures reaction. |
