JOHNSON OPPOSES DEAL Sacramento Cal., April 10 Reported Report-ed opposition by Governor Hiram W Johnson to the suggested purchase bv the state of the Western Pacific railroad, rail-road, now In the hands ot receivers, is expected to put a quietus on the project pro-ject tor the present. Governor Johnson, it was point ed out, has sustained the position that ownership by. the state should be sought if it could be shown that it w ere feasible, would be profitable and would receive a read response from the people of the state. Governor Investigates Plan. Shortly alter Rudolph Spreckels of San Francisco, originator of the plan, and Charles S. Wheeler, an attorney uf that city, came to Sacramento, and laid the plan before the governor, he began a thorough in estlgation to the present earning power of the railroads, rail-roads, its financial condition, tbe cost of extension into southern California the building of feeders and the outlook out-look for traffic agreements with other lines. Spreckels went east to confer with New York financiers returning a few days ago. Early this week he and Wheeler spent an afternoon with Governor Gov-ernor Johnson and Lieutenant Governor Govern-or John M. Fahleman on the project. It Is understood that Spreckels and Wheeler were still strongly in favor ot the scheme but that Governor Johnson and the lieutenant governor i;ited many reasons they have dis 6v red that made the scheme appear less practicable than at first. |
