Show M6LAS GOES INSANE IN CONVICT CAMP IN UTAH Salt Lake. April 10. John Douglas, a state convict serving a life sentence sen-tence for the murder or his wife In Ogden Valley about eighteen years ago, and one or the oldest prisoners in point of servitude, became insane yesterday while working at the state road camp in Washington county, according ac-cording to a telephone message received re-ceived by Warden Arthur Pratt last night. He Is being brought to Salt Lake and probably will be committed I to the state insane asylum, Douglas murdered his wife in Og-den Og-den alley follow ing a 6erle3 of domestic do-mestic quarrels which ended in his wife leaving him and going to live with her parents Her persistent refusal re-fusal to return to him prompted Doner-Ins Doner-Ins to kill her, which he did. He was tried and convicted of second degree de-gree murder and committed to the I state prison He proved a model pns-onor pns-onor and was one of the few murderers mur-derers who were allowed the freedom of the prison yard and later he was permitted to work with the road gang For the last eight or ten years, according ac-cording to Warden Pratt, Douglas has Phown signs of insanity. While with the road gang he proved a good worker, and while It was generally known that he was sutfering from insane in-sane illusions, he was permitted to remain with the road camp. Of IjitQ however, his condition has grown worse and yesterday he became so violent that It was found necessar to confine him at the camp. Warden F'ratt was notified and ordered him brought to Salt Lake. |
