His parents, who came to the United States from Ireland in died soon after his birth, and he lived with his uncle, .John Hughes, until he attained his majorit After preliminary training train-ing in Ohio schools. Dr Hughes began be-gan the study of medicine under Di E. P. Haines of Klyria and a few months later remord to Cleveland, where he entered the medical department depart-ment of Wooster university At the same lime he nlart.fi him. self under the guidance of Dr. M. L Brooks, one of the most eminent physicians phys-icians of Cleveland After three 3 ears of study he was awarded an II, D. degree, and in 1877 removed to Sandusky, where he took up the practice of his pretension In 1881 he moved to Port Clinton. O . where he remained until the fall of 18S3, when he went to New York City and took a post-graduate course. In 1887 Dr Hughes moved to Omaha. Neb, where he formed a partnership with Dr. D. C Bryant, and a year later went to Berlin and studied for some tim e Later he weut to Ixmdon and took a course of study at the Royal Opthalmic hospital there At both Berlin and London Dr. Hughes specialized on diseases of the nose, mouth, ear and eye. Returning to the United States late in the year of 1889. Dr. Hughes came to Utah and settled in Salt Lake, where he had since resided. In September. 1891 he was married to Miss Marie Gorlinski, daughter of Major and Mrs. Joseph Gorlinski of Salt Lake; who survives him. Dr Hughes was, for many years, a leading lead-ing specialist on the eye, ear and nose, but of late years had practiced his profession but little. He was a member of the staff at the Hoh Cross hospital and a member of the Salt Lake county medical society. |
