Show NEW TRACK ON 0. P. SOON TO BE PLACED IN SERVICE Georgo W. Maitland, division engineer engi-neer of tho Wyoming division of tho Union Pacific, arrived in Ogden yesterday yes-terday afternoon, completing an Inspection In-spection trip over the division. He remained in the city over night and departed for Cheyenno today on train No. 20. In connection with his trip, Engineer Engi-neer Maitland Inspected the work on the new stretch of double track between be-tween East Ogden and Gateway and said that it -would probably bo ready for operation by December 1. "Tho track laying and ballasting," he said, "Is virtually complotcd and tho new lino -would bavo boon ready for use by November 15, but for a decision de-cision made to line tho tunnel at Gateway with concrete. The excavation excava-tion for the tunnel was finished several sev-eral days ago but, in connection with tho Union Pacific policy of 'safety first,' it was filmed best to llnolt i.v. ....w.in Thlo wnrV will hn done -within tho next two weeks and it will then only bo necessary to connect con-nect tho tunnel track up with tho west end of tho now line, a matter of a few days." Tho new lino, Mr. Maitland stated furthor, will bo used for eastbound, or uphill, traffic, as It has a grade of only sixty feet to the mile, against the old lino grade of 90 feet. This will mean an appreciablo saving in the cost of Operating trains over tho hill, with a corresponding decroaso in running time. In addition to tho laying and ballasting bal-lasting of tho now track, tho present eastbound track between Ogden and East Ogden, has also boon substantially substantial-ly ballasted. This track was laid In 1907, but was not ballasted at that A gang of about 125 men is boiug employed at presont finishing up tho work on tho new track, working under tho direction of tho Chief Engineer's office at Omaha, the contractor's part of the work having been only that of grading and tunnel woj-k |
