Show SOCIALISM ATTACKED BY A SPEAKER 111 TABERNACLE David Goldstein of Boston addressed address-ed a fair-sized audience In the Tabernacle Tab-ernacle last night on tho subject of "Socialism; in Relation to Religion and to the Christian Family." The lecture was given uuder the auspices of Ogden Council 777, Knights of Columbus. Co-lumbus. The lecturer based his arguments upon the doctrines of Marx and En-gels En-gels whom, he said, were the founders found-ers of modern socialism and flts foremost fore-most authorities In the pro'sent-day movement. He maintained that the Socialist party is officially circulating circulat-ing atheist and free-love books of which he named twenty-five and as long as they do so, they must be held responsible for the doctrines set forth in them. In part, the speaker said, "Socialists "Social-ists seek to bring about a revolution in all departments of human activity their organization is not to be classed class-ed as a political party in the ordinary sense of the term. A genuine political poli-tical party seeks to control the power of the state In carrying out a more or less definitely stated policy, and in accord with our basic institutions. .This policy is arranged with the view of perfecting our domestic and foreign for-eign relations for the benefit of all the people. Not so with Socialism, It seeks the control of the power of the state with which to cause the state to die out. With the hand of the state, Socialists would throttle the sUite. We consider political action, ac-tion, says one of the national leaders of Socialism, primarily as a means for the propagation of certain revolutionary revo-lutionary tendencies, which may or may not be carried into effect by the uolitical method alone. It is this treasonable propaganda that the Knights of Columbus calls upon all Christians to oppose that they may safeguard their rights, their liberties and their property." Continuing, he presented evidence to show that "The materialistic conception con-ception of history," upon which the foremost Socialist authorities say tho structure of Socialism is built, Is monistic and directly opposite to Christian philosophy. His statements state-ments on this point, in part, were as follows: "According to the 'Materialistic conception of history, religion' is asserted as-serted to be a mere reflex of prevailing prevail-ing economic society and the existence exist-ence of classes. "Slavery, according to the philosophy philoso-phy of Socialism, gave birth to paganism. pag-anism. Slavery in turn gave way to feudalism, which was the parent of Catholic Christianity. Capitalism followed fol-lowed feudalism, and its religious offspring off-spring is the Protestant presentation of Christianity. As preceding economic eco-nomic systems have passed away, so will capitalism be succeeded by Socialism, So-cialism, and this will, create a new 'regime in which there will be no classes and therefore no more need to feed the people on 'religious opium.' So, In the words of August Bebel, 'religious organizations will gradually disappear and tho churches with them.' "DIetzgen, 'the Socialist philosopher' philoso-pher' says in 'philosophical essays.' 'if religion means the belief in a supernatural su-pernatural being, then Socialism Is irreligious.' 'Socialism and Christianity Christian-ity differ from each other as the day does from the night. Indeed, all religion re-ligion is servile, but Christianity is the most servile of the servile.' "A man to be a Christian," said the speaker, "must believe in an eternal eter-nal and unchangeable God; he must believe in revealed truths; he must believe In eternal, immutable mora! principles; ho must believe in personal per-sonal moral responsibility of each and every man to his Creator. To bo a Christian, a man must believe in the second coming of Christ, when he shall Judge both the living and the dead and render to each according to his thoughts, words and deeds, Irrespective Ir-respective of the environment in which he was horn and In which economic class he obtained the necessaries neces-saries of life. These beliefs a man must hold to be a Christian. These boliefs the 'Materialistic conception ot history' repudiates. A man must believe in tho "Materialistic conception concep-tion of history' to be a Socialist in the so-called scientific sense of the term. Hence, it is absolutely impossible to be a Christian and a Socialist at one and the same time, one rejects the other in toto. Therefore, no man can logically be a Christian and a Socialist. So-cialist. "There are no shrewder tacticians in tho country; Socialist propagandists propagand-ists know how to make tho moat of poverty, the discontent and the Ignorance Ignor-ance of the masses. Tho lack of charity char-ity and tho immorality of today, they denounce as though they held Christian Chris-tian views of life; all tho while Insisting In-sisting that the notion of free-will Is out of date and that society is wholly responsiblo for Individual shortcomings, shortcom-ings, that poverty is caused by robbery rob-bery and ignorance fostered by tho church; while discontent with everything every-thing and everybody Is their long suit, and there is no hope this side of Socialism triumphant "If a workman's religious scruples arc to bo overcome, the Socialist Johnny Is on tho spot with true history his-tory falsely employed to do the deed. 'Oh, yes, there are some atheist leaders,' lead-ers,' "they will declare, of course, but religion Is a private matter. You should recall the fact that Robert G. Ingersoll was an agnostic; that ho was one of the lenders of tho Republican Repub-lican party. He nominated James G. Blalno for tho presidency, he stumped the country from one end to the other oth-er for his party nominees, 'would it bo fair to therefore cbnclude that the Republican party Is an agnostic party?' par-ty?' The answer is plainly, no. "Then comes a second question, which looks pust like the first to the uninitiated. Is It then fair to conclude con-clude that tho Socialist party is an atheist party because somo of its leaders are atheists The sucker Is cnught, but not so tho man who things. Did ever tho Republican pnr-ty pnr-ty propagate the blasphemies of Ingersoll In-gersoll as its doctrine? Has ever an editor or a stump speaker, a stuto or national committeeman declared that men must believe in tho agnostic writings of Ingersoll, for instance 'Tho Mistakes of Moses' to be a Re publican? I challenge the Socialists to name even one. "Now let us turn the tables; did ever the Socialist party insist thnt The materialistic conception of historythat his-torythat materialist monism is its cardinal doctrine? Do the Socialists challenge mo to name the editors and speakers, the national and state committeemen com-mitteemen who declare that a man must accept the teachings ot Marx and Bagels, Bebel and other Socialist Social-ist doctrlnarles before ho may correctly cor-rectly lay claim to the term Socialist? If so, I shall add to the list of twent-ty-five names I have alreadv given. "Is then the Socialist party an Atheist party because Marx and En-gels, En-gels, Bobcl and other Socialists were atheists? "Not merely, no. The Socialist party is an atheist party because itB founders, Marx and Engols, set up the movement on atheist principles on the materialist conception of history, his-tory, on materialist monism; and because be-cause its leaders ever since have propagated 'these anti-religious principles prin-ciples as its bed rock doctrine. Only ho who juggles with the truth denies it; or he who, though calling himself a Christian reads into the materialist material-ist conception of 'history a meaning all his own, for -which there is no warrant in the philosophy or the practice of Socialist movement throughout the world." The concluding part of Mr. Goldstein's Gold-stein's lecture was given to an analysis analy-sis ot the Socialist attitude toward women, as outlined in Socialist literature. liter-ature. In his analysis, ho read from some ot the books, quoting many paragraphs, in which tho writers advocated ad-vocated free love, saying that separation separa-tion was better for the man, woman and the community after sex passion had ceased to exist. Other quotations were to the effect that under Socialism, Social-ism, men and women would live together to-gether as long as they cared to and separate according to tljeir inclination, inclina-tion, without the ceromony of divorce; di-vorce; that the women would work In the Industries for the home shall have become an Industry and the children would be brought up by society so-ciety as Its wards. "This, said the speaker, in summing sum-ming up his remarks, "is free love In its most brazen form, and In assisting as-sisting to make known to the people the fundamental hostility of Socialism Social-ism to religion and the Christian family, fam-ily, it will be seen that the Knights of Columbus are doing a work for God and country." |
