All three contenders in the 412-mile All-Alaska sweepstakes race for dog teams are now headed for Nome, having rounded round-ed the turn at Candle. 206 miles away, yesterday. John Johnson, who left Candle at 7:33 yesterday morning passed Gold Rim, 1S2 miles from Nome dl 10:35 a. m. Johnson's eighteen Siberian wolves are running well, all being on their feet when he passed Gold Run. Fred Ayor left Candle at 8:30 yesterday yes-terday morning and is only a few miles behind Johnson. Ayer lost some time when one of his dogs broke loose and he had to stop to catch It He was carrying one of his fourteen doss on his sledge when he left Candle. "Scotty" Allan, driving the Allan-Darling Allan-Darling team of IS dogs, left Candle at 10:07 a. m. All his dogs wero In harness nnd he Intended to make a hard drive to overtake the leaders. At 7:02 last night Johnson passed pass-ed Telephone, 122 miles from Nome. Twenty-eight minutes later Allan was reported at Haven, 146 miles from the finish, whilo Fred Ayer. who left Candle an hour and a half ahead of Allan, had been passed by the Darling malamutes, and ws bringing up the rer somewhere on the trail between Gold Run and Haven. It Is snowing again on the trail. The race probably prob-ably will be finished tonight |
