rendered onward christian soldiers stand up stand ftp for jesus and 1 I love to tell the story the memorial sermon was preached by the rev samuel biair an elk and pastor of the church and he said in part in behalf of the members of the first methodist church of ogden I 1 extend to the elks 1 adga ot our city a most cordial welcome to these divine services it s a privilege to join with you this morning in your annual memorial service it is fitting that you should in this beautiful way keep green the memory of those who in former years mingled with you in the lodge room by services you show your appreciation of those who have been faithful in the performance of lifes duties and you teach the younger generation that the friendships of life are not broken by death and that the smallest service rendered to others Is remembered long after those who rendered the service have gone to their regard your beautiful motto the faults of our br othera we write in the sands their virtues upon the tablets of love and memory would lead me to believe that the framers of your ritual most j have had in mind a scene enacted in i jerusalem many centuries ago when there stood before the sinless christ a woman charged with a segious of tense christ listened to the accusation and then with his finger upon the sands I 1 have always thought that that which lie wrote was a decord of her sin written where it might speedily be obliterated by the elements while the record of her pardon was written in the word of god where it would be read by all coming generation while conscious of the imperfections of humanity still we are not here to point the finger of censure at mans shortcomings we are here only to etol his virtues neither are wo here to eulogize the dead such an eulogy would in no way increase the happiness of the departed my mission ia to speak words of commendation to the living when I 1 recall your mission before coming to this place of worship of our march to the hospital where you dedicated a room which shall bo lu years to come a refuge for the sick and suffering and a resting place tor the weary I 1 do not believe I 1 could bring you a more appropriate message than that by the tt greatest theologian the apostle paul to the church at corinth and now faith hope and love these three buethe greatest of these is love before an analysis of the text I 1 want to impress upon your minds the gibat fact that you are indebted to jesus christ for the brightest and best things oi earth yes we are everlasting debtors to gods son jt eus jairl his regenerating hand upon the race of beings called men and they had a new vision a now bense ot justice a higher regard for the truth wherever ills feet pressed the cardi up in hta footprints flowers 0 love to sweeten and make flagrant the life of the world our father who art in heaven and instantly humanity grasped the truth of the fatherhood of god and the brotherhood of man he said ye are my friends and he world received its first lessons in genuine friendship he delivered the parable of the good samaritan and the world became a neighborhood bo sprang enar as dijt by magic men broke down all sectarian walls they leapt over national boundaries in their efforts to succor the needy and bring relief to the suffering he spoke of freedom and ns soon as men understood his teaching shackles were broken dungeons were illuminated and prison boors were battered down by his sledge hammer lloys of he blest little children and a child became a sacred and holy thing he told the story of tha prodigal son and there was kindled in the breast of every lost man and woman a lamp of hope which could only be extinguished by death with air the purity and gallantry 0 heaven he looked upon woman and she became the equal of man iia attended a wedding and marriage became a holy sacrament he entered the home ot mary and martha at both any and every borne was transformed into a sanctuary and every fireside became a sacred place when I 1 think of what jesus has done tor the human race I 1 am impressed with the fact that voltaire at least told abo truth once when he said jesus Is the creator of ajl mankind Is indebted to jesus christ and the only way we can ever discharge our obligation is by making the worlds elder brother our personal saviour and hang to in any way discharge thle obligation we must worship and serve him youir bodec my brother is a beautiful piece ot human workmanship but remember th church is a divine institution ution and as you have love for the haman I 1 trust you will have even a higher regard for the divine I 1 say be loyal and faithful in the discharge of your lodge duties but do not neglect the higher duties and requirements ot the church established by jebus chirst 1 I believe that the text of this morning la appropriate tor the place and oc caslon for you my friends make love the foundation order and yon have thus selected tor your foundation the besic thing of tho earth and heaven faith hope and love are the fruits of jesus life and these are the luscious fruits which adorn the table in his church and of which all of his children have a right to eat these three principals form the foundation on which every benevolent institution in the world rests because a christian has faith in god he has faith in humanity because his hope reaches out to a better world and purer life he hopes for the betterment of human conditions because he loves god he has love tor the human race a love that shows itself in charitable espres along and noble deeds faith hope and love are three links in the chain which holds heaven to earth and bind god to man the reason the apostle herein emphasizes pha sizes love is because he realizes that christianity is one great system of love when the services which were very impressive in their character had been concluded the elks reformed and marched back to the club rooms where the services for the day were concluded in the afternoon the biks again assembled in their club rooms aad went to the general hospital where they inspected the loom that hs been endowed aud the room was dedicated to the use of elks |
