Show ROW salt lake ogdan and atall light railway company clash hostile gangs of melt cr cd by the utah light railway company and the salt lake ogdan roads respectively ively watched each others amov e nientai furtively last night on third west street north of fifth north street says the A conflict has bicken out between tho two corporations over which shall lay track on the west side of the street in question and the courts may be called upon to settle it denizens of that section of tho city who watched the movements of the rival corporations yesterday expected that there would be a battle between the opposing forces but up to a late hour last night there had been no personal collision between them the utah light hallway company operates a street car une on the vest side of the contested street from west south temple street to fifth north street the salt lake ogden has a track on the other side of the street the salt lake ogden has built a railroad grade on the side of tho street the opposite from its old track from fifth north street where the street car alno stops to eighth north street about two weeks ago tho salt lake ogden laid about a block of track on this grade staring from the point where the street car line ends yesterday morning the street car company surprised the salt lake ogden officials by starting to lay track from the point where the salt lake ogden ceased laying track two weeks ago before the salt lake ogden people had time to catch their breath the light railway company had laid about a block and a halt of track by noon however the salt lake ogden recovered sufficiently from its surprise to set a force of men at work laying track a short distance ahead of where the street railway companas comp anys force was at work both gaffis worked all afternoon while the populace stood around and wondered when the trouble would start the light railway company throw rails and ties in between the track which it laid and the point where the salt lake ogden started work at noon but did not attempt to lay any track there bach side admits that the other has a franchise which covers the whole street and in view of tills fact it will be hard to get the matter before the courts as each apparently Is as fully entitled to lay tracks on either side of the street as the other it is probable that an effort will be made to reach an amicable agreement an official of the utah light railway company said last night that the object of the company in extending its track on third west street is to reach the oregon short line shops he de bleg the claim of the salt lake og dan road that it has any considerable grada there and says that his company is laying its tracks in the street but it is not denied that the track lay ing started at the point where the salt lake ogden ceased work two weeks ago simon bamberger president of the salt lake ogden said last night the utah light railway company started laying tracks on our grade and we will not permit it it wa have to go into the courts to stop jt that grade was built with our money and the other company has no right to use it there was no consultation between the officers of the contending companies yesterday except that sir bamberger and judge le grand young attorney for the utah light railway company had a tails oyer the telephone neither was able to give the other any satisfaction the salt lake commenced yesterday afternoon laying a switch to connect its old track on the east side of the street with its new track on the west aide |
