Show TESTIMONY IN TRIBUNE CASE salt lake dec 1 the news says the taking of testimony for the do bense in the libel suit of william R jones jr against the salt lake tribune et al was commenced in judge court this morning at 1045 at which time judge powers concluded his opening statement 0 o the jury tho first witness was william J home who was county commissioner when sir jones was appointed superintendent erin of the county infirmary and during the time the incidents cited in the articles published occurred he said that he had resided in this county for 46 years and was county commissioner during 1901 and 1902 w t cirps H anderson and henry harker sir jones was appointed superintendent of the infirmary on n ibuki at a salary of per month he stated ana the salary was increased at that time from 90 per month with the understanding that the superintendents family should not reside at the infirmary he further stated that during tho summer of 1903 sir jones was given permission to have jils family at the infirmary for a period of one month only he had been told by robert sherwood that the plaintiff had bought goods from sher wood for the use of his family and had them charged to the county when witness asked mr jones about it he said that he had refunded that money to the county the total amount ot tire sherwood bill as be remembered it was ir home said that no authority had been given plaintiff by the commissioners ners to sell any of the products of the infirmary farm excepting one hornc which was unfit for service in the fall of 1901 he said that the county paid out for hay on account ot a shortage at the infirmary farm no account was ever rendered to the commissioners ners of things sold by mr jones and so far as witness lenow the treas frers books only showed 29 which had been turned in by plaintiff tor frale of products he was told by mr sherwood that the latte had paid the plaintiff 70 for cows 63 for hogs at one time and 26 for bogs at another lime inthe fall 0 1902 but the money thus received was not accounted tor to iho commissioners he further said that the commissioners never authorized plaintiff to furnish food to the inmates which was not good or to give the employees better food than tho inmates no inventory of the stock at the infirmary was ever filed with the commis loners so that witness did not enow what stock there was at the in armary lr mary mr homo was still under direct examination when the court took its noon recess SIDNEY B DAWES DEAD 1 alil morning at 3 20 sidney B dawes a well known resident of salt lake died from heart failure at hiis home no south east temple street ir dawes who for the past eight years has been chief packer for the firm of hewlett bros was at his w ork wednesday as usual last night he enjoyed his thanksgiving dinner at home and retired apparently lu the best of hearth during the night hla wife was awakened by his struggles for breath and ran to a tor assistance when she returned it was found that life was extinct and a medical examination developed tho fact that heart failure was the cause mr was 40 lears of age and had been in robust health all his life etwas never suspected that he had any heart trouble and the first barap toms of it came last night sir dawes came to salt lake from nepal where many of his relatives live it Is thought that after a funeral service here the acs I 1 at vernal ot mrs nellie woodruff daughter of the late president wilfard woodruff who on saturday last underwent an operation for appendicitis itis fac deceased was 33 years of age and a most lovable woman and her demise is deeply mourned by a wide circle of friends mrs woodruff was a sister of bishop A H woodruff mrs 0 C beeba airs J J daynes and mrs william mcewan all of this city and leaves a family of alx children her remains will be brought here for interment MINING STOCK CONE salt lake dec 2 flab hundred shares of wabash mining company stock were stolen from a little daughter of jfrancis walkinshaw while sho was returning from the offices of the company the atlas block to her fathers home 1401 indiana avenue yesterday afternoon mr walkinshaw was ill and bent the little girl to the companas comp anys offices to pay an assessment on the stock she made repayment received the stock bachand bac kand got on a car to ride home before she arrived at her home she learned that the stock certificates were missing she recalls that a man who sat beside her arose buttoned his coat carefully ana deft the car during the trip the girl is positive that the were not dropped by her the stock was in three certin cates one for shares is issued in the name of her father another for shares is in the name of jane G walkinshaw and the third for shares is in the name of james A
