the vigor or of he affair tt was a lay for the candidates di the orlo irs for both of the r t parties most directly interested and for the etera of he city aa well while the vote cast in the early part of the day was extremely light as the time for tho closing ot the poll approached the voters in the various districts began to flock to the voting places and when 7 arrived the timi for the polla to close GOO votes had been cast in excess of the vote cast for glasmann and anderson two years ago all daylong caiTi agoa were to 1 seen traveling luck and forth from the different voting places carrying the voters while alia workers were exerting every endeavor lo 10 get everyone to the polls wb 0 had the right to vote along the street it was generally said that an exceptionally light vote had been polled but just what these statements were based on li Is hard to say us when the returns came in ft cascen that the vote exceeded that cast two years ago late in the afternoon the crowds began to gather on the street and there was much speculation as to how the election had gone the chairmen of both of the parties claimed that their candidates tor mayor had been elected and but little evidence on which to set i line on the actual result As night appi cached 1 bowling cheering mob took possession of the tit and begin to celebrate the of the people soon began to congregate before the places where bulletins were being displayed especially in front of this office and from early in the evening until the last returns bad been received awen ty fourth street in front of the stand ard examiner office wag packed with a howling mob of humanity who cheered anything and everything displayed on the screen the first returns were as to the straight vote and as bulletin after bulletin was displayed showing that kuchler was leading the crowd voiced heir of approval and later when the revised returns were announced they were equally enthusiastic over the strength that was shown tor conroy from the acu that they expressed it was hard to ell whom they favored and it appeared ahat they wanted to know which of the two were really elected and cara much who in spile of the great crowds upon the streets the keople were very orderly and the of arrests for disorderly conduct and for other causes were not worth noting during the evening there was considerable sid erable bolting on the result of the election for mayor conroy being the favorite and several bets of considerable amounts are known to have been made although there was considerable sid erable kuchler money to be had and even abter it became apparent that be waa defeated alg backers were milling to take a chance the only leal luss thai occurred was in the afternoon one of the democratic workers in the first ward made a mistake in the carriages and taking one hired by the republican managers began to rustle votes it was some uro before the mistake was noted and when it was there was something dolny fur a while it looked as it he would bo ar rested for hor but the matter was adjusted without causing his arrest on the whole it waa a most orderly election and both of tb apty pty managers are to be complimented on the clean methods employ to set abo voters to the at the headquarters at both of the parties a lare were Kt bored who watched the with interest the candidates bof mayor were not from the falstaff both of the candidates were of course deeply interested in hc result and the closeness of the race told on both as first it was announced that one and then the other led it was a late hour bhea the last returns were receded but the crowd remained until tha good night was thrown upon the screen and with a cheer departed to continue their celebration along the street |
