| Show MANY AR MADE IN T tammany thugs attempt to murder one of hearses leaders philadelphia overwhelmingly for reform heavy voting BRUTAL TAMMANY TACTICS new york nov 7 thomas one of the hearst leaders was beaten and perhaps fatally injured today by twelve men thomas is the head ot tho municipal ownership league committee tor investigating election frauds he had asked an election deputy to arrest a voter just outside 0 an election booth in street when he was knocked down and kicked about the bod thomas said chaa the men who assaulted him were support cra oe tammany hall new york nov 7 election day in this city dawned clear and crispy 1 with every indication of an enormous vote being polled the greater part of it in tho very early hours the polls opened at 6 and in nearly every precinct hundreds ot voters were already in line there was practically no cessation between the formal closing of the canvass and the opening of the voting booths many night before meetings extended into the small hours of the morning and the final shout had scarcely died away when tho city woke awoke a to the rumble 0 carriage wheels as party workers were borne here and there arousing and marshaling in line the more enthusiastic thusia voters the morning papers were filled with minute directions as to voting split tickets and the advice was timely as the prospect was that an unusually i large number of ballots would be unintentionally invalidated by tho voters the republicans members of the municipal ownership league and supporters of district attorney geromes Je romes independent candidacy have all directed their fight against tammany but without losing sight of individual interests until a wholesale scratching of ballots became inevitable the exposure by mr jerome last night of an alleged plot by which circulars were to have been distributed among voters ostensibly illustrating how to vote for jerome on a split tick et but which directions if followed would invalidate the ticket served to increase the fear this morning that in the contusion of tickets and candidates many votes would be thrown out as illegal situation Is unique in the possibility of the defeat of the democratic ticket when opposed by two straight and strong party tickets heretofore only fusion has been able to jeopardize democratic success and should tammany go down to defeat today the victory tor the municipal ownership league or the republican ticket will be unprecedented the betting may be summed up as follows geo B mcclellan democrat tor mayor 2 to 1 in his favor william R hearst M 0 L for mayor 2 tol against william M ivins republican tor mayor S to 1 against william travers jerome independent for district attorney 2 to I 1 in his favor ont of election arrests made before noon today in new york and brooklyn less than 30 prisoners were held by the magistrates for examination nearly all the charges were illegal registration whenever the prisoner bad a witness to swear to their residence tho word of this witness was taken in preference to that of tho deputy election inspector who caused tho arrest vole which is expected d to reach a total of more than in the city of new is being casi at 1918 polling places the total registration is the polls will close at five P m at the hearst headquarters today max ihmsen one of mr hearses He arsts lieutenants said A great many hearst watchers and captains have been bought off by tammany hall and have deserted us we have sent out volunteers wherever wo could learn of the desertions but they appear all over the city mr hearst said we are handicapped by not having an organization and by some of our captains having deserted us before noon today there had been sixty seven arrests on complaint of illegal registration all but one of the accused were discharged by the police magistrates some of whom criticized criticised deputies of superintendent of elections morgan tor errors in making the arrests two police captains were arrested and charged by watchers with being disorderly they were discharged A development of interest this morning was publication of a significant statement by arthur brisbane one of mr hearses He arsts editorial writers who declared that his employer was looking tor greater things than the mayoralty ct new york mr brisbane said mr hearst Is built for greater things even than the mayoralty of his city and hes going to get them this country Is hard up tor rich intelligent and powerful men the fine weather and the great interest taken in the issued to be de tided brought om a very large vote in the early hours of today A notable fact was the great number of volun teer watchers tor william T jerome the arrests were numerous but frequently were due to misunderstandings or to clerical errors on the registration books |
