PAY RESPECTS TO JUDGE BROWN salt lake nov 8 citizens of salt lak have been harrowed upa by judge willas brown of the juvenile court according to a statement by W J newman on the floor of the board of education last night mr newmans remark was incidental to the process of relieving his feeling with relation to judge brown and followed some remarks in tho same general vein from 0 W moyle president of the board who left the chair for the purpose judge brown came up for discussion in connection with a recommendation of the committee on teachers and school work that the board supply desks and other school equipment tor a school room in the morris detention home newman opened the fight on the recommendation by saying he objected to the board supplying material to a school about which the board would have no say so cumminas Cummin ss and henderson defended tho recommendation men dation contending that the board should take as much interest in the education of the bad boys and girls of the city as of the good ones isit Is it right for the school board to take care of the criminal classes demanded newman it Is the duty of salt lake city to care tor them and if the city w ants them taught it Is the cites business to provide the means of teaching them he said henderson questioned the propriety of designating the inmates of the home criminals 1 I dont L now about that put in moyle who had not yet left the chair 1 I was at the yesterday and when the class was asked how many of them bad ever stolen every hand went up henderson then moved to deter action until all the members of the board could bo present edwarda thomas and acre absent giauque seconded the motion to defer but it was lost moyle had turned the chair over to martin in the meantime speaking to the motion to defer he said 1 I think there Is an emergency clement in this affair judge brown has been calling up members of the board at all bouts of the night threatening to advertise them in the papers it they take action soon athla school will bo entirely under the control of judge brown and not of tho school board what do we know about judge browns qualifications I 1 doubt whether he has very great qualifications from what I 1 know of him it ane city wants a detention home let it maintain it I 1 have nothing against the detention home and nothing against judge brown but we did not appoint him and we have no claim on him
