Show COLORED MEN WERE DRIVING recklessly harmany Had Many narrow escapes on canyon road and end up by being thrown out from thursdays standard A most reckless and daring bit of fast driving was witnessed yesterday afternoon in the canyon and resulted in a double team attached to a three seated conveyance dashing headlong into a hay wagon throwing the occupants out injuring one woman and one of the horses to such an extent that it is thought that it will be of no further use in addition to demolishing the vehicle yesterday morning three colored men S B smith G dismukes and V lightfoot all employed emp loyes of the pullman palace car company engaged a learn and three seated rig for the day at the blackham livery one ot the boat teams in the stable was given them and the trio drove off somewhere else they loaded several others including some women into the vehicle they then drove to the canyon where they indulged in nearly all that was to be had about 6 they decided to return to the city the ordinary pace of the team was too slow for them and they soon were using the whip up the horse down the canyon craod they dashed at a terrific pace soon the horses became frightened through the careless way in which they were handled and increased their gait until they became wholly unmanageable age able there were many narrow escapes along the highway and the wonder is that the party escaped being thrown into the creek and killed some places according to eye witnesses the rig came within six inches of going over the bank after many narrow escapes and a short distance above the first bridge in the canyon a hay wagon driven by a farmer was going in the opposite direction straight into the hay wagon the horses plunged knocking one of the farmers horses down and throwing the occupants of the rig out upon the ground the force of the impact was so great as to hurl one of the colored gentry onto the top of the load of hay when the party had picked themselves up it was found that one of the women was slightly injured one of the horses of the livery team bad a bad gash in the left front knee while its hind legs were badly cut the other horse escaped with a few small bruises and the vehicle was badly wrecked what damage the farmers team sustained could not be learned leaving the rig by the roadside the horses were brought into the city and returned to the stable A veterinary surgeon was called and it required about twelve stitches to close the one wound on the horse that received the brunt of the collision it was the opinion of the veterinary surgeon that the horse would ba useless even after the wounds had been healed as the ligaments of the leg were cut to avoid arrest the three persons who hired the rig raised the sum of 65 in cash and gave their notes for 35 to pay tor the damage that had been done L C isom of salt lake who in company with a young lady was horseback riding in the canyon at the time of the reckless driving was firm in his belief that the whole affair was due to carelessness and stated that he bad dismounted as the runaway run away team approached and led his horse as near the hill as possible notwithstanding this the hub of the wheels came within alx anches of striking steed |
