Show WE WELCOMED AT FAIR FEW OF THE SINGERS BECAME SEASICK ON CARS excursionists on river steamers cheered the special train on its way to portland from tuesdays standard special correspondence portland august 19 after a long dusty ride for fifty six hours the choir beg rimmed and somewhat unsteady tor having endured the motion ot the cars so long arrived at the city of narrow twisting streets at saturday not the dust and heat tho trip so tar has been enjoyed by all members A few were quite sick while on the train however their illness was but temporary the train teas scheduled to arrive at the dalles at 9 a m but was owing io delays along the line two hours late BO breakfast was taken at the hotel there at 11 a m jay 1145 the train bad again pulled iut and had started due west following the contour of the columbia to portland the trip from the dalles to the exposition was the part of the journey mostly enjoyed natural scenery on a huge scale rich in colors of green purple golden and the dark blue of the deep river all blended into one harmonious picture but varied without bs coming prosaic in its arrangement greeted the eyes of members from utah as they rode rapidly by several paddle wheeled steamers loaded with excursionists going up the river passed the train on its way west the people on board the excursion boats recognizing tha inscription of the train waved their hats and received in a hospitable sign language the choir and welcomed them to portland at portland time the special pulled into the station at the water front facing portland street cars ready to convey all to the exposition grounds and in a few minutes after boarding them the people from the utah city were pressing tor yard to enter into and through the narrow gates that led to the american ann and the beauties of the fair bath tubs were eagerly sought and ame it not all of the adhesive oregon poll was removed from the dust covered travelers dua courtesy baa so far been shown hy the officials and attendants at the fair and all augurs well for a pleasant week no concerts or rehearsals will be given saturday night the evening will be devoted to sightseeing sight seeing and gaining a much needed rest then rehearsals hear will commence and concerts will be the order tor three out of the six nights spent inside the fair grounds the first rehearsal is set tor 10 sunday morning in the auditorium ano choruses will be gone over then in order to test the acoustic properties of the hall and to limber up the yokes of the singers |
